Inexpensive (and Easy) Summer Meals

For my family, summer is not all about cooking, unlike during the winter holidays. Instead, it is about spending time outdoors, going on summer adventures, visiting with friends and family, days at the park or pool, and nights on the grass watching a movie or music concert under the stars.  It is about inviting the neighbors over for a campfire and smores, catching lighting bugs, trying to get all of the ice cream drips before they run down your arm, and re-experiencing the feel of a light breeze coming off of the ocean. Still, we all have to eat, so … Continue reading

Little Hands Can Help

“Can I help you, Mommy?”  That is the question I get almost every time I enter the kitchen to make a meal or dessert.  There is a part of me that is elated and another part of me that would rather not bother.  If I allow little hands to interfere than my task will take longer and result in a mess only a two year old can make.  Too often, I find myself  turning down my little helper in waiting while I rush to get the cooking done.  I hardly look up when I turn her or her siblings down.  … Continue reading

Cleaning while Cooking

This week my 15-year-old daughter made an entire meal by herself. It was meat loaf and fried potatoes. I wasn’t home to help her, so she was entirely on her own. When I did come home, it was to a huge mess. I had done a really good job teaching her how to make one of our favorite meals but I had apparently not taught her the art of keeping the kitchen clean while you cook. It drives me crazy when I see someone cooking or baking and there is a mess everywhere. That’s probably why I especially enjoy the … Continue reading
