Dieting while Pregnant?

Pregnancy is a time of joy and expectation. It can be a time of anxiety for those concerned about gaining weight. Some women gain as little as ten pounds while others gain fifty or more pounds. For women who have a tendency to gain quite a bit of weight or who are already overweight the urge to diet during pregnancy is strong. Anxiety over gaining too much weight or adding more weight to an overweight body can cause one to make poor decisions. However, you need to be careful with your health and the health of your baby. Pregnancy is … Continue reading

Pregnant and in Prison

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a woman was pregnant and had to go to jail for a long time? I would hope none of my readers would ever face such a situation, but it does happen. Unfortunately, most stories do not have good endings. As I poured through dozens of accounts of incarcerated women and their pregnancies, I realized that childbirth is not a time of joy and excitement for many imprisoned women, instead, the experience is tainted with fear and the dread of leaving their babies, possibly forever. In 1994, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported … Continue reading

Pregnant Women Should Have Thyroid Checked

As if pregnant women weren’t subject to enough tests during pregnancy, one more may soon be added to the line up. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists is recommending that all pregnant women be checked for low thyroid levels as part of comprehensive prenatal care. The reason for the recommendation is studies which suggest potential danger to pregnant women and their infants from undiagnosed low thyroid problems. The condition, called hypothyroidism, is not uncommon. Approximately five percent of women who are tested during pregnancy are found to have hypothyroidism. There is evidence to suggest this figure may actually be higher … Continue reading

Pregnancy and Heartburn

One of the most common pregnancy – related discomforts is heartburn. About half of all pregnant women experience heartburn to some degree during their pregnancies. I experienced it rather severely during both pregnancies. In fact, when I was pregnant with Blake (who is now almost five months old), I started having heartburn a few weeks before I even suspected that I was pregnant. One day, I found myself reaching for the Tums that I had not used since my first pregnancy. I blamed it on the pepperoni pizza that I had just eaten, and I figured that all of the … Continue reading

Did Someone Really Just Ask Me That?

When you are expecting a child, people may ask you all kinds of strange questions. It is almost as if your growing mid section sends a message to the general public that they can just come on up and ask you whatever they want to know. One question that I got asked a lot during my second pregnancy was whether I thought that I could possibly love another child as much as I love my first born son. Whenever I was asked that question, my reply was that of course I could – why else would we be having another … Continue reading

What is Preeclampsia?

With pregnancy, it is important to remember that things may not turn out the way that you had intended. I learned this during my first pregnancy, and I experienced it again during my most recent pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my first son, I developed preeclampsia towards the end of the pregnancy. I began to show signs of it before I was to term, but fortunately the symptoms did not present fully until about ten days before my due date. Preeclampsia is a medical condition where a pregnant woman’s blood pressure rises suddenly and other symptoms including protein in … Continue reading

Spending Time With My Sister Part IV

It is amazing how time gets away from us. We made a really quick stop at the grocery store; both my sister and I have very quick gaits and we were moving through the store to get the items that we needed. Upon our return, we realized that we really did not have very much time to make the frosting and eat dinner. As soon as we walked in the apartment I got to work making the cream cheese frosting and my sister nursed the baby. After the muffins were iced, we rushed to eat as much of our dinner … Continue reading

Exercising in the Midst of Negativity

I have said it before and I will say it again: Exercise is hard! It takes a lot of motivation, effort, and commitment to continue to exercise day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year. It is HARD! There are countless reasons why many of us cannot seem to make the commitment. Sometimes the biggest challenge in exercising is getting started i.e. putting in the workout video or going to the gym. If we can conquer that initial struggle of just getting started, the workout happens and is done sooner than we thought (it does … Continue reading

DFW Family Expo

The DFW Family Expo was on Saturday. I haven’t researched to see if there’s anything comparable to this in California, but we didn’t have children when we still lived there. We had been actively trying to conceive for years without success, so the chances of my looking for, paying attention to, or attending a huge day-long event devoted to all things babies, children, and families were very small. I attended my first DFW Family Expo two years ago. I learned about the Expo because of my relationship with my mom’s group and Metroplex Baby and Kids. When we went last … Continue reading
