Teen Battles “Sleeping Beauty Syndrome”

Sleep is something that everyone needs a healthy amount of. Parents of young children probably treasure sleep more than anyone else does. Teens tend to sleep a lot, but not as much as a seventeen year old in Pennsylvania. She has been diagnosed with “Sleeping Beauty Syndrome”. Disney made the story of “Sleeping Beauty” well known to many of us when we were children. An angry fairy places a curse on Princess Aurora while she is still a baby. Nothing bad happens until the Princess becomes a teenager. She pricks her finger on a spindle, and this triggers the curse … Continue reading

Diet Soda Myth

It is not uncommon knowledge that soda leads to weight gain. The empty calories and large amount of sugar make this a no brainer. So dieters who love soda have turned to diet soda to ease their cravings while not consuming calories. Shortcuts rarely work in construction projects or dieting. Weight loss by replacing your daily soda with diet soda is not supported by research. In fact, the opposite has been discovered yet not conclusively proven. As someone who thinks diet soda and regular soda are not fit for human consumption this research is meaningless to me. However, I know … Continue reading

Is the Atkins Diet Making Me Crabby?

The first week that I was on the Atkins diet, I felt great! I was enjoying the changes to my eating habits, and truly liked the taste of some of the food suggestions. By the second week, however, things changed dramatically. I’m found myself feeling really crabby! Is this because of Atkins, or due to something else? When I started the Atkins diet, I expected to experience changes in my body. I was fortunate that I haven’t felt any caffeine withdrawal symptoms, and have rarely felt weak. I lost two pounds the first week, and my body feels “better” in … Continue reading

A Review of “Made to Crave” by Lysa TerKeurst

I was so excited about three weeks ago when I received in the mail two free copies of “Made to Crave” by Lysa TerKeurst, president of Proverbs 31 Ministries. I was eager to read the book and provide a review since Lysa TerKeurst also happens to be one of my favorite authors. Notice that I said “two” free books. Yes, one is to give away. To change things up a bit instead of giving the book to the first person who emails me, I am going to be giving it to the 5th person who emails me. Just drop me … Continue reading

Holiday Pounds and Inches

Around this time a few years ago, I was in my obstetrician’s office for a routine checkup. I was five months along. After glancing at my stats, my doctor noted that my weight had jumped up quite a bit. Up until that point, I had gained little to no weight, and now I had put on about ten pounds or so. “I did notice that I had gained quite a bit extra this month,” I said. “It was all of those thanksgiving dinners and holiday parties I went to.” I was not exaggerating, either. I looked back on the three … Continue reading

Product Review: Bellybar

I never turn down the chance to sample food (grocery store samples, anyone?), so when the makers of Bellybar asked me to review their product, I jumped at the chance. They sent me three Bellybar Boost snack bars in Baby Needs Chocolate, Berry Nutty Cravings and S’more to Love, and four DHA chews in Chocolate Cuddles and Citrus on Board. The Baby Needs Chocolate Bellybar was really tasty. It definitely satisfied my candy bar craving. S’more to Love was also very good; I loved the tiny marshmallows on top. Berry Nutty Cravings has a sweet and smooth yogurt coating on … Continue reading

Are You a Short-Order Cook?

I have found that many parents fall in one of two categories–either they are of the “I’m making one meal and if you don’t like it, you can make yourself a peanut butter sandwich” camp, or they are in the short-order cook camp–preparing a different meal for each member of the family. I am not here to pass judgment, only to share an observation and I am wondering–which camp are you in? I am somewhere in the middle…I am definitely not willing to stand in the kitchen and prepare four meals to order–but I also do try to take into … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review: November 11-17

Welcome to the end of an eventful week, as I described in last week’s Fitness Blog Week in Review, I’ve been trying to quit smoking. I slipped this week and you’ll see more on that in Day 11: Falling off the Horse later on today, but in the meanwhile, here is our Fitness Blog: Week in Review. Sunday, November 12 In Day 5: My Throat Hurts and My Sinuses Hate Me I described how I was doing in the cravings department, although Saturday I was miserable ill. We thought it might be the detoxifying, but as it turns out it … Continue reading

Day 3: I’m Still Not Smoking

I should probably title this piece, I’m a non-smoker, but I’m not there yet – mentally. I still feel that urge to have a cigarette. Yesterday, I was in the car running errands and I reached for the cigarettes as a habit until I realized they weren’t in the car and that I’d even gotten rid of my ashtray. It was such a knee jerk to reach for the cigarettes that I actually felt my heart speed up for a moment with adrenaline as fear hit me. I couldn’t have a cigarette. And yes, for a few seconds that generated … Continue reading
