In Memoriam – 2009 – Part 3

Before I could even finish my “In Memoriam” blog this year, we lost another celebrity – actress Brittany Murphy. The young actress died on December 20th after she was found unconscious in her bathroom. Her death was determined to be of natural causes, although the official cause of death has not yet been determined. United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009

On December 7th, almost 200 nations sent delegates to Copenhagen, Denmark for the United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP15. By holding this conference, the U.N. was hoping to get countries to develop new treaties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Several countries attending COP15, including the U.S., China, Brazil, and India, have already pledged climate goals before the conference. President Obama has set new goals at a 30 percent reduction of emissions by 2025 and an 80 percent reduction of emissions by 2050. Jingle Bell Run/Walk 2009

On December 5, 2009, the Arthritis Foundation is having its yearly festivities with their Jingle Bell Run/Walk. This run/walk will raise money for, of course, those stricken with arthritis. If you have arthritis or know someone with arthritis you know that they are in severe pain at times and suffer not only from pain, but also from generalized stiffness and achiness. Tax credits for energy efficient home improvement projects are back again. This is good news for many of us who have older homes that need some improvement. Of course, there are no tax credits for last year (2008), which means that the insulation we put in over the family room attic will not qualify. Salmonella Warning Issued for Merrick Beef Filet Squares

Check your puppy’s snack cabinet: Merrick Beef Filet Squares have been recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella. The recall was announced January 14th. Fortunately, no pet or human illnesses have been linked with the product. Instead, the possible contamination was found during a routine FDA test of the treats in December 2009. A follow-up inspection by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found problems with the packaging and the manufacturing of the treats. Voluntary Recall Announced for Over the Counter Medications

McNeil Consumer Healthcare — makers of Tylenol and many other familiar over the counter medications — announced a voluntary recall of several products on January 15th. The recall affects certain Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, Rolaids, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph’s products available for purchase in North, South, and Central America, the United Arab Emirates, and Fiji. Why the voluntary recall? Some consumers reported a strange moldy, musty, or mildewy odor associated with certain products.
