Frugal Food: Rice 2 - Blog Entry

10 Apr 2008 09:38 AM

White rice is only SO SO SO bad for you if you eat SO SO SO much of it! We normally eat brown rice instead, but we do like our Mexican rice to compliment our traditional Mexican cuisine and you just can't quite pull that dish off with anything other than white rice.

Another Reason I'm Married Without Children - Blog Entry

Children don't need doting grandmas and hip cool aunts if they have a loving mother and father to care for them. If you do not want to have children, that is a personal choice that everyone should respect. But you said you may one day mourn that decision and that is sad. I think you and Wayne would make wonderful parents.

Who's Your Favorite Movie Villain? Part Three - Blog Entry

07 Apr 2008 08:34 AM

Ooooh, Anton Chigurh was sooo scary in No Country For Old Men! I thought he really made the movie--not easy to do while sharing the big screen with Tommy Lee Jones. But I still just don't quite "get" that ending. ??

Keeping Baby Teeth - Blog Entry

I really do not know of a way to keep them where they will stay intact. I put my oldest's first few in the envelope attached to her baby book labeled "baby teeth" and they got sort of ground up. So I tried wrapping the next few in gauze and putting them in a baby food jar and those just sort of disintigrated (over the course of a few years). So I don't try to keep them anymore.

Homeschool Questions: What If My Kids Feel Left Out - Blog Entry

04 Apr 2008 05:57 AM

The 3 big field trips in the schools my children would attend are the zoo, Science City, and for the older ones a trip to Worlds of Fun (an amusement park) at the end of the school year. So we purchase family memberships to all three and my children get to go to the zoo any time the weather is nice, to Science City any time there is a new exhibit on display, and Worlds of Fun several times over the summer. Combine that with weekly trips to the library, soccer and softball, the park almost every day that is isn't rainy or cold, and I find that is really enough. Sometimes it can almost be hard to fit in anything else like the museum or a special show that comes into town.

Also, when you go to these places at odd times (when most children are in school) you will find other homeschoolers there. Your children will see other children who aren't in "school" and will probably even make friends with some of them.

Places to Buy Really Cheap Books - Blog Entry

02 Apr 2008 04:07 PM

I buy tons of used books. I have utilized all of the places you mentioned and the only other place I can think of is a used book store. We have Rainy Day Books and Half Price Books in our area. Thrift stores are generally much cheaper, though. I think you can find some real bargains at thrift stores on newer books, too. I have purchased all 7 of the Harry Potter series in hardcover at thrift stores, usually within a few months of their release. I just picked up #7 a few weeks ago. I already had it, but I wanted two, one for me and one for the kids.

Pick the Healthiest Water - Blog Entry

I count it as drinking water too, lol. I dilute them as well. They are made for use with disposable water bottles, but I have a few reusable bottles that hold about twice as much water and I will just add one packet for a whole 32 oz of water in my bottle. I enjoy it more than plain water, which I would never drink enough of. It helps me stay away from sodas, which is hard for me but I haven't had one in 2 weeks. Yay!

ABC Soap Opera Uses Homeschooling In Story Line - Blog Entry

02 Apr 2008 10:28 AM

While it is annoying that they would choose to misrepresent homeschooling on One Life to Live, I think that homeschoolers have to keep the overall message of daytime soaps in context. They misrepresent everything on these shows...marriage, family, pregnancy, homosexuality, mental illness, the corporate business world...everything you can think of and more. Anyone with half a brain cell would take one look at any given storyline on a soap and say, "That is not realistic!" So, IMHO, the same holds true for the daytime soap's idea of homeschooling.

Pick the Healthiest Water - Blog Entry

What about those little flavored packets that you add to your water bottle to make lemonade or tea? I know it isn't exactly the same as drinking water, but they are at least low calorie. I think the last box I purchased was 5 calories per packet.
