Selling Versus Donating - Blog Entry

02 Apr 2008 09:13 AM

I always donate unwanted items and we donate a lot of children's clothing. My oldest daughter is 10 years older than the twins and my son is an only boy. I don't have the patience or the storage space available to hang on to clothing or shoes for a decade until one of the younger girls grow into things. I have tried a few yard sales, but it is a lot of work to hold a yard sale and I am never able to earn enough to really make it worth the time and stress it causes me.

The Ethics of Buying and Selling Used Curriculum - Blog Entry

02 Apr 2008 08:44 AM

I wouldn't do it. I think it is wrong. If a curriculum costs more than you think it is worth, why would you want it? If it costs more than you can afford to pay but you still want it because you value the educational philosophy or the teaching style, I think you have to decide what subjects are most important to you and buy only those you can afford while supplementing with something less expensive for the other subjects.

I do, however, feel that once a curriculum is purchased for a family's homeschool, that family should have the option of using said curriculum for subsequent children. And since I am homeschooling a family of four, I wouldn't purchase something for my oldest that I couldn't use for the other three down the road, like the Calvert.

Denise Richards Says She is a Loser - Blog Entry

I wouldn't judge her too harshly for featuring her daughters on the show. I see children on television and in movies every day. Plenty of them grow up to be Britney or Jamie Lyn Spears or Danny Bonaduce, but plenty others don't. At any rate, I am sure Richard's thought it through before making the decision and thinks that the show will not harm the girls. As their mother she should know what is best for them and only time will tell if she was right or wrong.

Connery and Cohen Returning to the Big Screen - Blog Entry

I grew up in rural Kansas and I really don't appreciate this disgusting pig (Cohen) ridiculing Kansans for profit. If I ever saw him on the street I would completely ignore him. My response would be so bland and nonchalant that he wouldn't be able to make 2 cents from exploiting my reaction. Ignore the jerk, Kansans! Don't give him any material for his horrible movie and maybe he will go away!!

3 Signs That Mean You Need to Think About Changing Curriculums - Blog Entry

30 Mar 2008 10:36 AM

We have a combination of factors making us unhappy with our curriculum. It takes me an hour or longer to prepare for the 3 daily lessons in my twins Kindergarten curriculum, but only about 10 minutes to teach each lesson. After actively teaching for a short time, I am suppose to give them busy work: worksheets, coloring pages, stuff like that. I would really rather just take them to the library and read to them!

Then with my older children, well my son began his 4th grade curriculum in September and finished it--ALL of it--in January. So now I spend a lot of time trying to find him supplemental activities because he needs more than four and a half months of school per year, lol! My daughter hasn't finished hers yet, but I had to find her alternative Math and English because the lessons provided with the box set just weren't working for her. If it were just one or two things I didn't like I would try to tweak it and make it work, but all of it together is just too much, so we are going to switch in the fall.

Stick With What You've Got - Blog Entry

I would agree with you to a certain extent, however, if you are working with something that you and your children are absolutely miserable with, I think you have to try something new. I completely agree that it is very helpful to sit down and write out a philosphy of education as well as a list of goals that you would like to meet by the end of the next school year and a list of goals you would like to meet by the time each child graduates. When you research curriculum armed with those goals it is much easier to eliminate things that won't meet your needs.

How Much Are Food Prices Really Rising? - Blog Entry

Yes, I feel as if I am on a forced diet as well. As I try to stay within my grocery budget, our meals keep getting smaller! I have already cut out all of the junk I usually buy for the kids (fruit snacks, twinkies, cheese curls, etc.), so I don't know how much further I am going to be able to stretch my shopping allowance. I may have find a few extra dollars from another part of my budget, but I am not sure where. Certainly not gasoline!

Would You Donate Your Baby? - Blog Entry

Are they really "donated" babies, or are the parents of said babies receiving compensation for use of the babies?
