Answering Questions About California's Now Infamous Court Case - Blog Entry

08 Mar 2008 03:06 PM

I have read several articles about this case over the past week or so and somehow it wasn't clear to me that there were two seperate cases--one dealing with the abuse allegations and another that dealt specifically with the family's homeschooling. I still think it is a case of the court system in CA trying to rewrite the letter of the law rather than enforce it, however, I am not in favor of storming the gates of the Supreme Court.

Why What Happens in California Matters - Blog Entry

What I don't understand is why the state of CA can't prosecute for the child abuse/neglect and leave the fact that they are homeschoolers out of the wording of their ruling. It makes me angry that the courts are using a child abuse case to set a precedent about homeschooling while all but ignoring the abuse aspect of the case, especially if that is why this was brought before the court in the first place.

Why Exactly Are We So Concerned About Socialization Anyways? - Blog Entry

05 Mar 2008 09:11 PM

My son has high functioning autism and I can't begin to tell you how many people believe that he will only "get better" by being in school with his peers. But the thing is, when he was in school he was actually less social than he is now. On top of that he was miserable because the all important peers were so mean to him because he just didn't fit in. Now that he is at home, he is actually much more equipped to socialize with other children we interact with, makes freinds more easily, and he is overall a much happier person. So...I have often asked this very question--why are we so concerned about socialization??

Publicly Educated and Can't Research - Blog Entry

I read the article. It was riddled with grammatical errors as well as errors in fact. Her assertions that homeschoolers are hiding our children or that they will be lacking in character because they don't have a locker or a snow day really don't make sense to me. But honestly, it is so far off in so many ways I commend you for being able to focus your criticism on one thing and simply address that issue.

Win a Book and Help Me Organize! - Blog Entry

I am homeschooling four children and I am an evening student at the University, and as a result, my home is far from clutter free. I have noticed that most of my clutter seems to come from the children's clothing, so I like to keep a small trash bag in the laundry room. When I do the laundry anything that is getting too small or too damaged to keep goes straight from the dryer into my trash bag, and then when the bag is full I take the bag to a nearby thrift store that accepts donations. It seems to help.

String Figure Fun - Blog Entry

I used to play with a loop of string when I was a little girl. I had forgotten all about it, but now I am off to rummage up a ball of yarn so I can show my little ones some of these patterns and tricks. How fun!

I have been trying to rent this for 2 weeks, but it is always gone when I check the Redbox (I refuse to pay more than $1 for a movie rental, LOL). Anyhow, now I just want to see it even more!

Save Money on Butter - Blog Entry

21 Feb 2008 05:37 PM

My Mom's bread machine has a butter churn setting on it, but you can still make butter in a machine that doesn't have a butter setting--you just have to make sure you take it out after it mixes and before it begins to bake. All you put in the machine is about 1 cup of very cold heavy cream or heavy whipping cream, and just let it mix...and mix. After about 30 minutes of mixing, you will be left with about 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup of buttermilk. You can save the buttermilk or just dump it down the sink if you wont use it, but then you will need to rinse the butter with ice cold water a couple of times to get all of the buttermilk off the butter. Then you flavor it with 1/4 tsp salt or herbs and use it or use it plain!

Have Mercy on the Twin Moms!!! - Blog Entry

17 Feb 2008 11:04 AM

Even twins who don't look like twins bring out some wacky behavior in people. The other day at the dental office I actually had another lady in the waiting room tell her son that my daughters are not twins, after my twins told the boy that they were. I (politely) smiled and asserted that, yes, the girls are fraternal twins. She sniffed at me, turned away from us, and loudly whispered to her son to stay in his seat --basically telling him not to play with the crazy non-twin sisters anymore!!
