What is ACORN? - Blog Entry

ACORN in Kansas City, MO is a disaster. They came to my door four years ago, (a man and a woman) they were going door to door to get people registered to vote. I was already registered. The woman asked me who I was going to vote for and I politely told her I did not want to discuss politics with her. Plus, I had a Bush/Cheney sign in my yard so I sort of thought she could have figured it out...

Well, I looked out the window a few minutes later and the guy was kicking my sign!! I went outside and asked him to stop that and get out of my yard. The woman came back up to me and started telling me that her boyfriend and son were both unemployed because of George Bush. Also, she had lost her doctor because of George Bush and she "felt sorry for me" because I was going to vote for him. She stated this repeatedly. I asked her to give me the number where I could reach her supervisor at ACORN. She gave me an official looking card and after I got rid of them, I called the number. It was disconnected!

I only use half of the recommended amount. I think the manufacturers tell you to use more than really necessary so you will run out faster and need to buy more, lol. But that is just my own theory--I have no evidence to back that up. But my clothes are clean. I have little kids who get into all manner of dirtyness and spill things, and their clothes almost always come clean (stain free) with no pre-treating.

New Children's Vitamin D Recommendation May Require Supplements - Blog Entry

When Erica (now 15 years old) was a baby I bf exclusively. Everything was perfect with her, soft stools, good apetite, no spitting up, etc... until at her 6 weeks check up the pedi prescribed poly-vi. As soon as I started giving her that junk, she was cranky, collicky, spitting up, constipated, you name it! So I threw it out and refused to give further supplements. She was back to her old self within a few days.

Every subsequent child, I have shunned vitamin supplements and they are all very hale and hearty, LOL. They do drink vitamin D enriched milk daily and see at least 15 minutes of sunshine a day, even when it is cold.

When I was buying regular detergent it was a monthly expense, but I buy a huge bucket of HE detergent that lasts about 3 months so I actually think it is cheaper. For us, a $10 bucket lasts 3 months for a family of 6. That is pretty good. I used to spend that much once a month before.

I have had mine for about 2 years. It states in the operating manual that because it is a high effeciency appliance you must use high effeciency detergent in it, otherwise you may have a problem with mold. It does also reccommend that you leave the door slightly open when it is not in use. I have followed those guidelines and not had any problems. I love my front loader!

But...I have to admit that I know a woman who got rid of hers and went back to a basic top loader because her machine smelled so badly of mold her kids wouldn't even wear freshly laundered clothing! And I know for a fact she was using regular detergent and using way too much detergent per load. She was also keeping the door closed between loads, and I think she has a tendency to let a load sit inside the washer for so long that it needs to be rewashed and that probably contributed to the overall problem as well.

Same principle as pig in a blanket? Ha Ha LOL! I make pigs in a blanket all the time but that toad in a hole really threw me. Way too funny!

You know, they eat frogs legs in some places. I avoid those places, LOL!

I make pretty darn good crock pot oatmeal too. Do you put raisins in yours? I usually add either raisins or some chopped apple and cinnamon. Kids love it!

Have you seen the animated movie Shark Tale? It is about a great white who is a vegetarian and wont kill any other fish for food. Then there are the sharks on Finding Nemo who have a 12 step program to help them stop eating fish. Their mantra is "Fish are friends, not food!" Funny stuff, cracks my kids up!

My all time favorite is so predictable--A Christmas Story. I dont even get sick of it when they play it 48 hours straight on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. And I have the DVD. I usually watch it at least one time between January and November, and then like a dozen times in December.

Do Aquarium Pets Beg? - Blog Entry

There is a beautiful ornamental pond at the gardening shop my grandmother loves to buy all of her plants and things from. It is full of japonese coy fish, and they have a little wooden bridge that crosses over it and a fish food dispenser on the bridge. It is just like the ones at petting zoos, you put in a quarter and turn the dial and out comes a handful of fish food pellets.

Well, those coy fish congregate under that bridge and as soon as they hear a coin drop in the machine, they start crowding under and jumping and splashing around llike crazy! My oldest daughter was actually frightened of them until she was about 6 or 7 years old. They are that intense!
