Why Do Homeschoolers Speak Negatively of Schools? - Blog Entry

02 Jul 2008 10:21 AM

I am actively dealing with this issue right now. We just moved from Kansas City to Fort Worth. In Kansas City, where the school district is horrible and lost accreditation years ago and has still yet to be reaccredited , it was easy to explain why we chose to homeschool. Now we are living within the Keller Independent school district and from what I understand, they are among the best in the state. In short, people move into this part of town JUST for the schools. So now, it becomes more difficult to articulate my devotion to homeschooling my children, especially to people who simply assume that I want them to give me information about what I need to do to get them ready to start at school next year, LOL.

Even my in-laws, who were previously supportive of my decision are now trying to convince me that now that we are in a great school district, I should "take all of that extra pressure off myself, and just send them to school with all the other kids." Can no one understand that I really believe in what I am doing? I think my children are better off for the choices I have made regarding their education. Why should I change that just because we have moved? Sorry, just venting a bit : )

School's Involvement in Homeschooling: Question Answered - Blog Entry

30 Jun 2008 01:27 PM

You ask, "with no guidelines or "checking in" who is to say that some homeschool children are learning anything?"

My answer is, the parents. When children are not learning anything in a public school or a private school environment, who is responsible? The teachers? The school system? No, of course not. Neither will be responsible when that child becomes an adult with limited skills and without the ability to live self-sufficiently, the parents will. Therefore it falls to the parents to devise a better solution for their child. The same holds true for homeschooled children. Their parents have a much higher stake in their futures than do the school systems. The public education system has absolutely no place at all in my homeschooled children's educations.

Welcome to De-Cluttering Boot Camp - Blog Entry

30 Jun 2008 12:42 PM

I am on board! I just spent 2 hours this morning attempting to declutter my twins closet and simply do not have the strength right now to tackle their dressers and toy boxes (yes, plural LOL!)

We just moved into a new house (3 states away from our old one) a month ago, and I am coming to realize that we just packed up all of our clutter and brought it with us. The new house is actually larger than the old one, so I am trying to avoid the trap of tucking uneeded items away in all that extra space.

My decluttering goals would be to get rid of clothes we do not wear--this is hard for me because my kids have a lot that they don't wear but that still fit them and I am always thinking I might need them sometime. And to get rid of old toys and eliminate paper clutter--not easy when homeschooling 4.

Homeschool Oversight: Does it Make a Difference - Blog Entry

30 Jun 2008 12:18 PM

NO! It is NOT necessary for states to regulate homeschoolers. Parents who homeschool do so because they want the very best for their children and when you want the very best for your children, you will strive to achieve that, state regulations have nothing whatsoever to do with it. The only thing that state regulations accomplish is getting parents all stressed out because they need to make absolutely sure they are in compliance.

Do Not Call List - Blog Entry

I also just recently moved and got a new phone number. I have registered but I am getting some of the same calls you described and then some. It is so aggravating! The do not call registration takes up to 30 days to go into full effect and I am counting down the days!

Mike Myers: The Bomb or Just Bombing? - Blog Entry

27 Jun 2008 08:52 AM

Now Adam Sandler I can definately see as a future Tom Hanks type...used to do nothing but silly comedy roles but has broken out of that stereotype with movies like Click, Reign Over Me, Punch Drunk Love, Spanglish...All of which I have LOVED. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him in a huge blockbuster like Forest Gump.

Essential Oil: Orange - Blog Entry

Where can you buy essential oils? I am always hearing about the benefits of this essential oil or that one, but I never really see them for sale anywhere, except for tea tree oil, which they have at Wal-Mart.

Mike Myers: The Bomb or Just Bombing? - Blog Entry

I don't know, I'm not really feeling Mike Myers as a future Tom Hanks. And I admit I haven't seen The Love Guru or Bonfire of the Vanities, but I gotta say, Joe Versus the Volcano wasn't anywhere near as bad as The Cat in the Hat.

Tricking a Spouse Into Parenthood - Blog Entry

I know someone who went so far as to have her tubal ligation reversed behind her boyfriend's back so she could have a baby with him, and she did this knowing that he was considering ending the relationship. I thought she was despicable to do such a thing and even more despicable to lie about it and say it was a surprise pregnancy. He found out about it when he accompanied her to an OB appt and the doctor asked, "Where did you get your tubal ligation reversal done?" in front of the boyfriend, but he already suspected it because of the $6000 charge on her credit card and a few other things that had been going on.

I am just glad that I didn't know anything about what she was doing until it was done because I wouldn't want to be in the middle of a situation like that.

Should Menthol Flavoring in Cigarettes be Banned? - Blog Entry

23 Jun 2008 09:28 PM

Leaving menthol out of this legislation will harm the black community? That makes no sense to me. Persons addicted to tobacco who prefer menthol will likely adjust to some other brand if menthol cigarrettes are taken off the market. And isn't it the tobacco itself that is hurting the smokers of said tobacco? Not the legislation that is hurting a specific group of smokers! Any American has the free will to say, "No, I don't think I will take up a nasty habit like smoking because it will most likely harm my health."
