Foster Discussions and Keep Communication Open

Have you ever had one of those stretches where you were so busy and distracted that it dawned on you that it had been a couple days since you really sat down and talked with your child? When this happens we get filled with guilt and remorse and wonder how on earth we could let such a thing happen… As busy single parents, we really have to make the extra effort to foster discussions with our kids–the older the children get and the more busy we all become, the harder it can be to carve out the time to chat. … Continue reading

More Tips for Serious Discussions with Your Mate

In a previous article I began giving some ideas on how to more successfully have a serious discussion with your mate. Communication is a very important part of having a healthy relationship. In addition to making certain that you talk, it is also equally important how you communicate. There are many different ways to talk to your mate. Some ways are much more effective than others. My first suggestion was to not begin the conversation with “we need to talk”. Using this phrase often leads to the assumption that something negative is about to occur. Most men in general are … Continue reading

Successful Serious Discussions with Your Mate

There are many cases in a relationship and marriage when a couple needs to discuss serious issues. One well known phrase to begin one of those serious talks is “we need to talk”. Each time that I hear this phrase, it automatically sets up a negative tone in my mind. It refers to a problem at hand and often a complaint from a spouse or mate. Therefore, when needing to discuss a serious issue with a partner, I suggest using a more positive tone. Much in what you receive from a conversation goes into what you put into it. If … Continue reading

Debt and Marriage: How It is Tough to Love When You Owe

Many couples enter into a marriage with debt already in hand. Others accumulate debt together. Either way, nurturing a loving relationship can be hard when debt is hanging over your head. In fact, according to a study by Jeffrey Dew at Utah State University, couples who reported disagreeing about finance once a week were over 30 percent more likely to get divorced than couples who reported disagreeing about finances only a few times a month. Another inference can be made from this study: there is a whole lot of disagreement about money out there. Debt is a source of contention. … Continue reading

Politics, Social Media, and Your Home Based Business

The election is coming right up, and I will be so glad when it is over. While I have paid some attention to the discussions that are going on in order to make an informed decision of how to vote, I have refrained from participating in the outpouring of political discussion that has been going on on Facebook. That may seem odd to some people, I mean, I am a lawyer – don’t lawyers like arguing and debating? Sorry to disappoint, folks, but I only like arguing and debating if I am getting paid to do it. Anyways, as the … Continue reading

A Hot Topic in the LDS Church

The subject of homosexuality and the gospel has been on my mind a lot lately, and on the mind of many Latter-Day Saints, I’m sure. I have had many discussions with friends inside and outside of the church about these issues. I know people that are gay. I live close to people that are gay, and there are people in our society that I truly admire that are gay. Recently, an active member of the church posted a blog post sharing his intimate story about how he is a homosexual living in a heterosexual marriage, and recently decided to share … Continue reading

More Trouble With Medi-Cal in California

There have been some ongoing problems with the Medi-Cal program in California. Recently, a judge ruled that the California Department of Health Care Services violated disclosure law when it refused to provide background information on cuts to the Medi-Cal program. Medi-Cal is part of the Medicaid program in the state of California. The funding for Medi-Cal comes from both the State and Federal government. It is a public form of health insurance that is designed to be used by people who are low-income, people who are disabled, and people who have specific kinds of serious diseases. In 2008 and 2009, … Continue reading
