Literacy Leaders

04 Mar 2007 12:26 AM

Literacy will improve when families commit to studying the scriptures together and parents read to their children, introducing them to great literature. As long as we think this is only to be nutured in the classroom, all the money and literacy teachers we throw at it won't, in the end, solve the problem. We can teach skills in school, but sadly, if when children go home, their lives are filled with distraction, and those skills are not used in real life, not just home work, it will be an one step forward, two steps back world.

instead of replacing parents with school personal, we need to educate parents to their vital role in helping their children succeed. We need to be encouraging and including parents, rather than replcing them. If parents are apathetic, it is time to inspire them.

Donna:) hey, that is me! I love walking it has been a boon to our friendship. In fact it has been one of the best things I have done with my children, and it has been the best for my marriage. Walking is cheap, it focuses the energy and frees the mind.

Full Day Kindergarten

I do not believe that early childhood need to be institutionalized. School is an artificial world. Children need real context to their lives. This context makes learning meaningful. To believe that kindergarten progams will not be target by those who want to include inappropriate programiming of children is short sighted.

Over focus on academics can help children learn to hate learning earlier, and also, the more important lessons that they should be learning get missed. We end up with a highly trained and poorly educated society. History shows that leads to societal disaster.

Personal Scripture Study

I like to start my day off with scripture study as it sets the tone for the entire day. I am an educator and I know if I do not read the best first, I may never get to it.

The Protection of a Good Book

I read primarily to know, to learn, and my appetite was huge. Ficiton was not really my thing until the last 5 years as I started experiencing the classics I had never experienced. Now I read to transform. What line makes this book worth the read? How am I a better person for experiencing this book? What eternal truths have been confirmed? I usually do not read to escape; I do that with my creative outlets:)

LDS Families: A Decaying Zion

AH, the one foot in Zion and one in Babylon myth. One cannot do both. Either you are 24/7 your religion or you are both feet in Babylon and only delude yourself that you can do both. For as the Savior said, no man can serve two masters.

I do not think that people should use the resources of their employer, without their consent for church uses, as that would be theft. Id do not think people should use the time their employer is paying them, to do personal things or things not related to the business at hand.

On the other hand, I am in agreement with GypsyGirlElliot "The Point of religion is to guide your entire life and lifestyle.

We own two businesses. I even tithe my gross. Because what I choose to spend to enlarge or maintain my business, is my choice. I could spend it all. I tithe it because I recognize where it came from and who it really belongs to. God is the loving provider, and not like the tax man, whom you figure out what you owe after expenses:) Ok that is how I do it. I hope people I serve in my businesses feel that I am living my religion in all I do.
