Skin Cancer and Your Diet

20 Jul 2007 08:34 AM

Great recommendations on how diet influences our risk of skin cancer! A few more foods that may help fight off skin cancer include: Artichokes - silymarin found in artichokes possibly helps with prostate cancer prevention as well Grapes - proanthocyanidins in grapes appear to be protective Other foods that may save your skin in the summer include salads with locally grown greens and cruciferous vegetables.

Do it Yourself with Safer Building Materials and Home Products

28 Jun 2007 03:55 PM

Thanks for posting this and raising awareness. Many of the common household products we use contain carcinogens, and the Environmental Protection Agency has ranked indoor air 4th in environmental causes of cancer. When reading ingredients make sure to check safety recommendations. Some products such as wood strippers contain methylene chloride, a strong carcinogen. To protect yourself a fume mask is necessary, and hiring a professional may be safer and cheaper. An excellent resource for evaluating products is available at www.householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/products.htm.

Fast Food Kids' Meals---How Healthy Are They?

20 Apr 2007 02:30 PM

Nice post! I think you said enough to make me take an alternate route so my children don't see the golden arches, but there is one more issue we need to be aware of. Those tempting french fries and potato chips are high in acrylamide. Acrylamide is a substance present in concrete, that was found to form during baking or frying of certain foods, such as potatoes, in 2002. In 2005, the World Health Organization labeled acrylamide as probably carcinogenic to humans and warned that people eat less of these foods. California's attorney general has filed suit against 8 fast food establishments requesting that these foods be labeled. To see which foods may cause a risk to your children, check out www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65/acrylamideintakefdaappendix.pdf.

How Many Calories Do You Burn While Walking

22 Mar 2007 04:22 PM

Great post Heather. Being a fanatical hiker, I can feel the health benefits of walking. When I talk to people about weight loss though, I strongly recommend limiting portion sizes at the same time so they don't get discouraged.

American women are consuming 335 calories more per day than they did 30 years ago. Based on these numbers, the typical American women would have to walk 75 a minutes per day simply to maintain her weight, not lose!

Keep up the walking!

Travel Health: Children

22 Mar 2007 04:06 PM

Thanks for another great post Aimee. Did you know that a parasite that causes bladder cancer is the leading cause of death in men between 20 and 44 in Egypt? I didn't before researching cancer prevention. With our lust for international travel and adventure, often taking our children with, we need to be informed parents. Thanks for your suggestions. A helpful Website for reviewing health concerns in various parts of the world is available at www.cdc.gov/travel/

Reducing Cancer Risk: Air Pollution

22 Mar 2007 03:59 PM

Great post Christine! I was surprised when I learned how concerning indoor air quality is. The Environmental Protection Agency has ranked indoor air 4th in environmental causes of cancer. Eliminating smoking is essential. Avoiding woodburning stoves and fireplaces. Choosing solid wood furniture over pressed wood products. A few houseplants can help as well! NASA has studied common houseplants for their ability to absorb carcinogens. A single spider plant in an average room can absorb up to 90 percent of formaldehyde in the air from things such as upholstery, pressed wood, wallpaper etc. Thanks.

The United Fat States of America?

22 Mar 2007 03:49 PM

I love your list of changes, especially number one...set an example. The news has been flooded lately with concerns over the childhood obesity epidemic, yet I have seen nothing like your note to set an example! Our children model themselves after us. Currently 78.2 percent of men aged 40 to 59 in the U.S. are overweight or obese. What do we expect? Thanks for your great insight!

What's all the fuss about dark chocolate?

08 Mar 2007 11:16 AM

Thanks Alison, for reminding us that we can indulge a little>

Dark chocolate actually has a phytochemical content similar to that obtained in two full days worth of fruits and vegetables! Of course there is more to vegetables than phytochemicals, and calories add up so it is not a substitute. But we can smile with that small piece...if it does not melt in our pockets!

A cup of hot cocoa shared with a friend can be positive as well. A cup of good quality hot cocoa has twice the antioxidants of green tea and three times the antioxidants of red wine.

Thanks again!

Cancer and Cell Phones

08 Mar 2007 11:09 AM

Thanks Aimee. I as well have reviewed the studies to date on cell phones, and most of these are quite reassuring. One study in Sweden did show an increase in benign brain tumors, but this was only in analogue cell phone users.

I still, however, add a word of caution. Most substances that cause cancer have a latency period of 10 to 20 years. This is the period of time between exposure and the development of cancer. If we did a study on smokers who had smoked for 15 years, we would not see a large increase in cancer. But wait 40 years!

Use a land line when available, purchase a head-set, and try not to make calls when driving. If cell phones are determined to be completely safe in 40 years, you may have at least avoided an accident!

Thanks!

Why Does My Body Need Vitamin D?

08 Mar 2007 11:01 AM

Thank you for this reminder about the importance of vitamin D! A recent study showed that getting adequate vitamin D (up to 2000 IU;s per day), cut the risk of breast cancer in half, and drastically reduced the risk of colon cancer.

While dairy products are supplemented with vitamin D, it is hard to get this amount. A glass of milk contains approximately 100 IU's. Sensible sun exposure (avoiding the period between 11AM and 3PM) etc. can be very helpful. Ten to fifteen minutes spent outside with 40 percent of the body exposed, results in the absorption of 2000-5000 IU's of vitamin D.

As with everything, moderation is important, and I thank you for your reminder that an excess (usually from oversupplementation) can be dangerous.

Thanks!
