Link Between Premature Babies and Mental Illness - Blog Entry

25 Jan 2009 10:25 AM

Do you have a link to an all English version of the article? I was recently (2 years ago) diagnosed with bipolar type 2 at the age of 30. I was born 6 weeks early, so this research interests me. Additionally, I gave birth to a son last year who was only 26 weeks ... he is doing very well now, but just wondering if we have to watch him for problems (and, of course, I'm still searching for reasons why my problem came about). Thanks.

Vicks VapoRub May Make Children Sicker - Blog Entry

14 Jan 2009 12:45 PM

Hmmm... I think the point here is that the children who suffered respiratory distress had it put UNDER THEIR NOSE, not on their chest. The vapors are very irritating so close and THAT is why the kids had the severe reactions. Their nostrils are so small in diameter, any swelling is a BAD thing. That being said, I don't see how the product isn't safe when used per the directions printed right on the bottle. I am sure the grandparents were thinking it would be stronger (they were right) and therefore better or more effective under the nose (wrong). In a completely different direction, perfectly healthy adults use it under their noses all the time ... those would be the adults that work in a very stinky job (dead stuff, garbage, etc...). I can attest it covers nasty smells quite effectively!

Lance Armstrong Defies Odds Again - Blog Entry

I was kind of thinking along the lines of STDs ... I mean just because they're famous, doesn't mean they can safely have unprotected sex. Who knows, maybe they go as a couple to their doctor and get tested. Anyhow, my point is that just because you're likely (or not, in Armstrong's case) sterile, doesn't mean one shouldn't ensure they are protected... I guess this story just goes to show the body's ability to heal itself.

The Eight Biggest Laundry Mistakes 2 - Blog Entry

If you have a high efficiency, then you have to check under the gasket in the rim. Socks and underwear like to work their way in and get lost for a really long time if you don't know where to look!

Diaper Free Baby - Blog Entry

in a little late on this one ... moms in other countries that wear their babies for significant portions of the day know when their babies have to go. Those babies don't wear diapers--mom just takes baby (or baby's bottom) out of the sling and no one gets messed!

Would You Know If a Man Were Living in Your Attic? - Blog Entry

01 Jan 2009 09:05 AM

Our home is quiet, for now. When the dogs are running around barking like maniacs, not so much. My little guy has a paralysed vocal cord, so his loudest isn't all that loud. Combine that with creaky floors throughout the house, and yes, we would surely know if someone were living in our house. Although, I can't say it would be a wise choice of locations for anyone (except the occasional field mouse) b/c we are in NY state in an older house and it gets COLD upstairs. If I were to choose an attic to live in, it would be in a newer house or a warmer state!

How to Find Places to Nurse in Public - Blog Entry

I can't imagine a twins mom doing so ... I was just being a little extreme to make a point about discretion on the part of most mommies. Not having or knowing any breastfeeding twins, I can't really picture how the double-nursing would go without a bed or couch and maybe an extra set of hands (help daddy!) -- twin+ moms have my admiration.

Unless nursing twins, a stranger's "breasts" would never really be showing. With a mother-child pair that has their latch down pat, how long is the breast really exposed anyway ... a couple of miliseconds? That's only if the mother doesn't drape a cloth over her shoulder first. Anyhow, what child at a playground is watching the mommies that closely? Prohibition in children's play areas seems silly to me.

I wish I could be nursing my baby (NICU 4 months, pumped and drove an hour 1-way for 14 weeks)... anyhow, I am lucky to live in a fairly liberal state. I checked into the laws while I was still pregnant and here (NY) a mother is allowed to breastfeed anywhere the mother is legally allowed to be. Of course, your personal comfort level comes into play, but it was nice to know we'd be legally protected just about wherever he got hungry. Anyhow, I think it is important for people (not just mothers) to be advocates for babies and defend their right to suckle when hungry (and NOT in a bathroom stall!).
