How Not to Walk Your Dogs - Blog Entry

10 Nov 2008 01:06 PM

I have an invisible fence. It keeps my dogs in my yard very nicely. However, it does NOT prevent them from barking at just about every living thing that passes in front of our house. You should see how many people (seems like young men, usually) who will intentionally dawdle, allow their dog to start up our driveway and even turn and walk by multiple times, all the while my dogs are going nuts. I'm not kidding when I say my husband and I watched a boy (early to mid-teens?) walk his dog back and forth in front of our house several times. Well, our house is set far back, so by the time my husband got half-way down the drive, the kid spotted him and headed home in a hurry. ...not just kids, though, b/c I have seen a guy in his early 20s seem to dawdle past my house, just for the fun of watching my dogs act like idiots. Now yes, I could train my dogs to be better behaved, but I don't think other people are entitled to act like idiots, either. The things people will do never cease to amaze me.

Caffeine Linked to Underweight Babies - Blog Entry

I drank my regular (about 10oz) cup of coffee every day and ate the occasional milk chocolate. I did deliver very early (at 26 1/2 weeks), but he was large for that age--2 lbs. 12 ozs. I often wonder how large of a baby he would've been had he gone to term. "They" never found out why he came so early, but I was severely depressed for 3-4 months of my pregnancy (linked to premies). btw he is home now and doing very well and my moods are now stable:).

A Cat Convert Success Story - Blog Entry

As a veterinarian, I find that many people are "adopted by" their cats. I always ask new owners where they got their cats from, and you'd be surprised how many of them start off with "well, he/she was hanging around..." (you know how the rest of the story goes;))

Something for Parents of LEGO Lovers to Think About - Blog Entry

ah ha! now I know where to look to find them! I haven't really looked very hard, I just remember seeing them when shopping for a friend's child and seeing how specific the kits were. I also remember playing with a much younger cousin and being disappointed that the kits were so limiting (glad they weren't my Legos). Now, when my little guy gets old enough for the good old Legos, I know where to look:).

I don't like how it is nearly impossilble to get "plain" lego kits. They all seem to come as kits that make something very specific and leave little room for creativity. Many of the "bricks" don't lend themselves well to other functions. Whether gender-specific or not, they aren't as open-ended as they used to be. What happened to just the mulit-colored blocks of different sizes that could be anything you wanted? That is my problem with legos. My little guy is too small to play with legos now, but I hope a "retro" version comes out before he is old enough.

Study Finds Link Between Depression and Premature Babies - Blog Entry

On my little guy...born early march at 2 lbs. 12 oz. 13 3/4 inches long, transferred from the hospital he was born in to the nearest women's and children's hospital via ambulance accompanied by the respiratory team. they would've life-flighted him, but he was born during a blizzard. he was given a 40% or less chance of survival from the neonatologists at the hospital. he had heart surgery at 8 days old to ligate a pda(heart). he had a brain bleed on both sides, grade 4/4 on one 2/4 the other. he had some retinopathy of prematurity(eyes). he had bronchopulminary dysplasia(lungs). he had vesicoureteral reflux(bladder to kidney flow of urine). he had scrotal hydroceles. I think that is everything. anyhow, he spent 4 months in the NICU and came home early July on oxygen and a monitor. he only needs oxygen while sleeping and may get rid of it altogether in another week or two. all his other problems are either mostly or completely resolved, with only the VUR remaining. he is currently 12 lbs. and 24 inches long. Shortly after his birth, I had a psychotic break in the NICU (the other hospital released me too early) and spent about a week and a half in another hospital. early in the summer, before he came home, I was suicidal and spent another week and a half in the hospital. since he has come home, my moods have been pretty stable, although I cannot breastfeed him like I wanted b/c of the medicine I am on. I am back to work part time and feel I'm doing well all around. I'm feeling like things are going to work out for us, but I'm mad at the hospital he was born in. i feel that if i had been taken seriously, we may not have had to go through all that (not to mention my poor husband!).

Hmm.... I was severly depressed for 3-4 months of my pregnancy and was just starting to feel back to normal when I delivered at 26 weeks. I am newly diagnosed with bipolar disorder and I think the depression came on with the sudden stoppage of my meds (we weren't trying to get pregnant and they weren't safe for the baby). I was actually in the middle of a psychotic episode when I went into labor (they didn't believe that I was in labor) in the psych ward. Any yes, we have discussed the case with a lawyer. Anyhow, they never found a reason for the premature labor, but that study does interest me--thanks for bringing attention to it.

More Ways to Use Medication Safely - Blog Entry

"I haven't come across a medication that would be harmed or negatively affected by shaking it" The only medication I can think of that would be affected would be insulin, which should be mixed by rolling, so as not to introduce air bubbles. That is a pretty specific case, and I'm sure patients getting insulin would be educated on their proper handling. Any dose of oral medication, it seems, shouldn't be greatly affected by the introduction of some air bubbles, as the amount is usually much greater.
