Easing the Stomach Bug

Like many families, the stomach bug has come to call.  Such a rude house guest who takes up residence making everyone miserable and always overstaying its welcome.  The stomach bug this year appears to be especially rude causing every family member days of pain and agony.  The worst part is just when you think you are getting better you get sick again.  I thought I had seen the last of the flu bug but it appeared once again affecting the last two members of my family it missed the last time.  It all started with my littlest one who woke up in the middle of the night throwing up.  She acted as if she was fine the next day until that evening when she was sick again.  Then I fell victim next and for three days I was in bed sick.  From that point it hit everyone else making them sick for a few days.  We would think we were better and then we would get sick again for a day or two.

When your child is sick you naturally want to make her feel better.  It was so hard to see my little one with such stomach aches and having to endure vomiting and diarrhea.  There is some comfort such as Popsicles and Gatorade to keep hydrated which is vitally important.  I gave my child a cup of warm chamomile tea with honey.  Chamomile or ginger tea will relax and ease stomach issues.  A fever does not always accompany the stomach flu so you won’t have to give Motrin which can be hard on the stomach.  Avoid dairy foods as they increase stomach discomfort.  If your child is hungry start off slow until vomiting stops.  You may want to provide soup and bland foods such as mashed potatoes just to be sure it won’t cause her to get sick again.

Call your doctor if you suspect it is more then the stomach flu or symptoms do not improve.  Be cautious of dehydration.
