Study – Smoking During Pregnancy Increases Risk of SUID

A study that was published in the Journal Pediatrics aimed to investigate the effects of maternal pregnancy and smoking, reduction of smoking during pregnancy, and smoking during pregnancy. Their conclusion was that US rates of SUID could be reduced by 22% if no women smoked during pregnancy. SUID stands for sudden unexpected infant death. It is used as a broad term that encompasses all sudden infant deaths. This includes SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), accidental deaths, and sudden natural deaths (from infections, disorders, neurological conditions, and homicides). In the study, the researchers investigated a known factor for SUDS: maternal smoking during … Continue reading

Miley Cyrus on Video Smoking Salvia

While I am not entirely surprised, I was still disappointed to see a recent video of Miley Cyrus “tripping out” on salvia, a legal marijuana-like plant. It seems that yet another child star has fallen from grace. Should anyone really be surprised? I hate to sound pessimistic but every time a new teen idol rises, I wonder when the downfall will hit. I am waiting for the likes of Justin Bieber and others to do the same. I would like to have a more positive outlook but it seems that fame and fortune is just too much for these young … Continue reading

The Effects of Antidepressant Use on Newborns

A few months ago I wrote about the new guidelines submitted by the American Psychiatric Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists concerning treatment of depression during pregnancy. At that time, the decision on whether to continue treatment with antidepressants was largely dependent on the severity of the depression. It was found that for some women, the benefits of treatment outweigh the possible risks of treatment. Recently another study conducted research on the effects of antidepressants on newborns. The results showed that the newborns of mothers who took antidepressants during their pregnancy were more likely to be born … Continue reading

Quitting Smoking While Pregnant

We all know smoking is bad for your health, but when you are pregnant, this bad habit is not only hurting you, but your baby as well. The American Lung Association reports that babies of smokers account for up to 30% of low-birth weight babies, 14% of preterm deliveries, and 10% of all infant deaths. Ideally, you should quit smoking before you conceive. If you become pregnant by accident, or do not realize you are pregnant right away, you should make every effort to quit as soon as possible. Whatever method you choose to quit smoking, you should have completely … Continue reading

Smoking Increases SIDS Risk

According to the Centers for Disease Control, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the third leading cause of death for U.S. infants. After years of research into the disorder, the Back to Sleep campaign was started and mothers were warned against putting infants to sleep on their stomachs. The National Institute of Health reported a 30 percent decline in SIDS deaths in the years after the campaign began in 1992. Researchers in Australia have found a link they think may have an even bigger impact, maternal smoking. According to research conducted at Monash University in Melbourne, mother’s smoking may be an … Continue reading

Cocaine: Side Effects and Long-term Effects

This is our second article on cocaine and looks at the common short-term side effects and long-term effects of regular usage. The effect of cocaine on the body is determined by a number of factors including how much is ingested, the purity of the supply, your weight and height, your general health, your mood at the time of ingesting the drug, your past experiences with cocaine and whether or not other drugs such as alcohol, are taken simultaneously. The immediate effects of cocaine ingestion are a feeling of confidence and wellbeing, a sensation of being excited, a propensity to take … Continue reading

The Effects of Illegal Drugs on the Fetus

Studies have shown most illegal drugs to have a negative effect on the baby. The effects can vary according to the drug taken, the amount or frequency of the drug use and the time in pregnancy when the drug is taken. It’s best to refrain from all drug and alcohol use during pregnancy. Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in America. There are no conclusive studies on the effect of marijuana on the fetus. One reason for the lack of conclusive evidence is that most mothers who smoke marijuana also tend to smoke cigarettes. This makes it difficult to … Continue reading

Smoking With a Newborn in the House is Dangerous

There are a whole host of personal health risks for smokers. My grandmother swore that her doctor told her smoking was fine and that she was not the worse for it. While she didn’t die prematurely, she did die of lung cancer. Not only is smoking bad for you but second hand smoke poses health risks to the point where they have legislated that there be designated non-smoking areas in public places so that non-smokers’ health won’t suffer. No one really wants to talk about the health risks that smoking poses to a new baby though. It’s mentioned here and … Continue reading
