Travelling with Babies - Feeding Tips

Travelling can be a little stressful when you have a baby (or two!) in tow. It gets especially tricky once your child moves on to solids, since feeding will be a bit more complicated than just finding a quiet spot to breastfeed.

Fortunately, baby feeding while travelling can be easy if you keep baby comfortable and happy. One way to do this is by giving him the kind of food he has been used to at home.  While baby food in jars can be useful when travelling, if baby is not used to this, he may refuse it. But there is no reason why you cannot prepare baby's food in a motel room the same as you would at home.

The main thing to remember for baby feeding is to use bottled water for both washing food and utensils, and cooking. Some foods such as banana can be given raw, but remember to wash your hands in bottled water before preparing it. Don't feed baby foods that he's not used to as the last thing you want is a gastric upset. Take his own utensils, as not all hotel cutlery is suitable for feeding a baby.

Taking a portable highchair can give you a much-needed break. Many hotels don't have high chairs available and it can be exhausting to eat with a baby on your lap. The stroller might do double duty as high chair. Check the temperature of baby's food and milk if kitchen staff has heated it. Many have no idea what temperature it should be and you run the risk of scalding.
