Raising Chickens: Interview with the Chicken Lady 2

09 Nov 2008 11:06 PM

The feed I use is from Purina.I used the Start and Grow when they were chicks and now I use the Layena formula. Also, now that's getting colder I have been giving them a little of the Flock Raiser with the higher protein content. They get scratch grains as a treat and I mix this with wild birdseed that's mostly millet and milo. I could get cheaper feeds, but I didn't like some of what I saw on the ingredient tags and don't forget if you feed your chickens bad stuff, you'll wind up eating it too. My chickens are free range and get plenty of insects and greens. They love earwigs and fight over snails, and can't get enough of dandelion leaves and grass. They also love just about anything else I bring them. Yesterday I brought home half a small watermelon and some bread, today they got to have the starchy, glutenous water from last night's pasta, and tomorrow it will be the water from the broccoli we had tonight. They come running running up as soon as they see me wanting to know what I've got.

3 Self-Reliant Ways to Be Frugal

This is the first year for the greenhouse, so this is all experimental for now. I have a red heat lamp in there, and all of the tomatoes are in wall-o-waters, so the base of the plants should be protected if it does get below freezing inside. The chickens body temperture is over 100 dgrees, but they're are small in an 8x8 ft space, so I'm relying mostly on thermal mass from the sun's heat stored in the tubs of soil and closed containers of water. So far this is working well, but we haven't seen any really cold tempertues yet, it can go below zero here.

Back in March, I got 10 chicks. I now get around 8 eggs a day and the eggs I sell pays for their feed, so I get free eggs, insect and weed control, and an abundance of fertilizer. They are also keeping my small greenhouse warm, so, I'm still harvesting tomatoes even though we've had freezing tempertures at night for the last month.

Save on Home Cooling

31 May 2008 02:20 AM

Our house has no air conditioning and most of the windows face west , so , keeping our house cool has been a developing project . As soon as the sun goes down , I open the windows and turn on the swamp cooler fan ( the pump is broken but , the fan really pulls in cool air . ) All night the windows are open and the fans running to push out the hot air and pull inthe cool air . By morning , the house is in the 50 - 60 degree range .As soon as the sun comes up I turn the fan off and start closing the windows , blinds , and curtains . This year I'm going to try the window panels I made from cardboard to keep out the winter cold to add anther insulating layer . Along the west side of the house I have a shadecloth awning hanging fom the eaves staked out with fence posts ( click on my name for pictures .) All this keeps our house at about 70 degrees for most the day when its around 100 outside .

I have a friend who buys storage unit contents at aution and resells the contents , much of it at yard sales . He keeps empty boxes under the tables and passes them out to shoppers telling to fill up the boxes and " the more you buy the cheaper it gets ". Your tip #3 made me think of trying that in reverse .

Selling Your Stuff on Ebay

Ebay can provide some real bargins for buyers as well . I just bought four pairs of slightly used running shoes from an Ebay store that sells used athletic shoes for men , women , and children . The total cost , including shipping , was just over $31 . All are quality brand name shoes and are clean .

Finding the Best Garage Sales 2

I stopped a yard sale in a very exclusive neighborhood once , they had coffee mugs priced at $5 each and everything else was very highly priced . I wonder if they sold anything that day . Meanwhile , at a sale on my working class street , on a very hot , sunny day in the early afternoon , they started giving me armloads of stuff they didn't want to put away . I also like to get on my bike and cruise around looking for the post yard sale free piles .
