Three of our five boys have asthma, one complicated by a heart condition. They are not currently having problems in school because of it, but it nice to have your list so I can be prepared if this comes up. Home Study Denied!26 Nov 2006 07:55 AM It made us very nervous when our home study was done. Not that we had anything to worry about, but it is very nerve racking, what if I say the wrong thing and so forth. I will say that I have met people who passed the home study that should not have passed in my opinion. It has made me wonder if anyone ever fails it. Of course, in our state there is such a demand for people to care for kids that there must be some pressure to be lenient. Disorder of the Day (1)25 Nov 2006 03:09 PM We have a child that is diagnosed with ADHD and I am very upset with the way we are treated by the psychiatrist's office. He watched him play for a few minutes and said it was ADHD. All they offer us is pills. I asked if could be some sort of post tramatic type thing, he is an adopted child who had bad things happen in his life once upon a time. And they said, doesn't matter, it would be treated the same way. On a visit to the nurse practioner, I mentioned that he had obvioulsy had some depression in the last week and she was ready to start medicating that. It seems that all a psyciatrist does is dispense meds, anything else would take up to much of his time. My tone probably shows how frustrated I am. Ed Paul. You Don't Have To Gain Weight During The Holidays25 Nov 2006 12:25 PM Well, I didn't think that I would eat much, I didn't even sit at the "adult" table, I instead stayed with and served the kids. But, inspite of myself, I gained 3 pounds yesterday. I guess all of those temptations, a little bite of this and a little bite of that stacked up against me. Anyway, I am now orking to get back to where I was as quickly as possible. Ed Paul. Are Your Kids Active?25 Nov 2006 12:20 PM I have discovered by accident a technique with my children that is really working. I was driving to the grocery on Saturday morning and some sports fitness expert recommended that you always start your children out with fruit in the morning, just leave an attractive bowl of it out before breakfast. He said that if they eat fruit first, they will crave it for the rest of the day instead of junk food. Well, we have done that, and it is working really well. As they are getting up, I put a large bowl of fresh fruit on the breakfast table. All of it is eaten rather quickly. To my surprise they eat the same amount of food for breakfast that they always ate on top of and after, they ate the fruit. And now, they want fruit out during the day and that is what they snack on. I guess the most embarrassing topic of discussion for my wife was the discussion of what goes on in our bedroom, including the frequency thereof. Exercise in the Water23 Nov 2006 07:56 PM I think that swimming is also the ideal exercise for seniors or those about to become seniors. I have recently started dieting and working out to get my body back in shape, the prospect of turning 60 soon was my motivation. I had been a runner 25 years ago, but I knew from experience that runners have injuries. My solution was to start swimming. Swimmers are hardly ever injured. Swimming uses almost all of the major muscles in the body. I have been seriously dieting for six months, I have lost 70 pounds. I have been taken off of blood pressure medications. I am now doing a masters swim workout every morning at my local YMCA and am up to 1200 yards. My goal is to level off at 1800 yards, roughly a mile. I feel 20 years younger than my age. To Separate or Not to Separate: Twins in the Classroom23 Nov 2006 07:43 PM We are about to put two sons, ages 5 &6, back in school after homeschooling for a while. They are exactly a year apart, the oldest will do fine academically,but he is immature. The youngest is socially immature, but he is very bright academically. We are thinking about putting both of them in kindergarten. We also think that they would be better off in separate classrooms so that they will not be competing directly with each other, enough of that goes on at home. I have lst about 70 pounds over the last six months and I am very apprehensive about today, gaining weight that it took me three weeks to lose.
