Fire and Ice

When it comes to winter travel, most people fall into one of two camps:  fire or ice.  The former is more attractive to those who prefer to escape Old Man Winter’s wrath and soak up the sun in a warm climate.  The latter is more inviting to ski bunnies and other cold weather enthusiasts.

Fortunately, there are ways you can save cash regardless of where you vacation this winter.  By planning ahead and solidifying your travel arrangements now, you are more likely to land a money-saving deal, such as:

CANADA

For those who run to snow and ice rather than away from it, consider a trip to Montreal this winter.  The popular tourist destination is easy to get to from the northeastern United States, which makes escaping on a weekend even more enticing.  You can drive over the border or take a train from New York or Boston rather than drop a ton of money flying there.  What’s more, hotel rates during the winter months are typically lower than in the summer.  For example, at La Terra Nostra, a Bed and Breakfast located near the St. Lawrence River, winter rates are down to just 129 American dollars per night.  That’s about $50 less than if you were to stay in the same rooms during the height of the summer season.  Likewise, rates at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal start at around $380 for weekday stays in January, February, and March.  Compare that with the $435 you’d have to pay if you stayed in July and August.  In addition to the reduced seasonal rates, many properties in Montreal offer half off on second-night stays and give guests a special welcome gift.

ARIZONA

Winter is considered the “low season” for travel to Sedona, Arizona.  That’s good news for frugal travelers looking to save on accommodations.  For example, during the winter months you can stay at the Best Western Plus Arroyo Roble Hotel and Creekside Villas for just $170 per night.  In comparison, the same rooms go for $240 per night during the summer months.  Other hotels in the area feature similarly priced low season offerings, plus free breakfast and additional perks.  Also, flights to Sedona are also reasonably priced during winter.  Right now, you can find roundtrip airfare from New York to Flagstaff for just $350.
