Freelance Writing: Keeping Track of Ideas - Blog Entry

28 Jul 2006 08:17 AM

Great tips Sherry! I keep a filebox that holds the larger size index cards. I also purchased a tracking software which keeps track of everything in a very simple format. I keep a small notebook in my purse and a digital recorder. It is great for those times when I see a person I can turn into a character.

One day I saw the cutest little girl all in pink flowery clothes talking to her mother in spanish while her mother sat knitting. I was sitting across from them at the doctors office and had nothing t write on but a napkin. That was the day I decided to put supplies in my purse.

I would love to see any other tips you have, perhaps in a 10 tip format!!!

How to Swaddle Your Baby - Blog Entry

27 Jul 2006 03:30 PM

I had to have a grandmother teach me. They didn't teach me at the hospital. Turns out I did it wrong for a few years. Then a nurse friend of mine showed me how to do it correctly. Now, as a new grandma I am an old pro at swaddling.

A lot of mothers are buying the swaddling kits at Walmart or some of the other outlet stores. I still stand by the receiving blankets. You get a much tighter wrap and babies really like the swaddling to be tight.

My newest grandson (barely 4 days old) gets cold so easily I swaddled him up for a nap about an hour ago and he is asleep at this very moment.

Thanks for teaching mothers who need to know. A few pictures would have been even better.

Ode to Twins and Supertwins: 28 Interesting Facts About Multiples - Blog Entry

27 Jul 2006 03:24 PM

Very cool! I am a fraternal twin. I had to spend 28 days in an incubator. I only weighed 3 pounds whereas my twin sister weighed 5 pounds 4 oz. She was already a big eater and a bully inside the womb. (LOL) Oh, and our mother didn't exactly make it to the hospital for the delivery.... we were born on the bridge on the way to the hospital.

Interesting facts about us:

I am ambidextrous. We particpated in Twin Studies in our childhood. We both have high IQ's. We picked up foreign languages easily. We could tell when the other one was going to call before the telephone rang. I knew the exact moment of her death (I suddenly became ice cold )

The twin connection is quite interesting.

A Birthmother's Love - Blog Entry

27 Jul 2006 03:13 PM

I am happy for you Nicole. I was adopted along with my twin sister and younger sister after my birthmother abandoned us as babies. We lived in several foster homes and even an orphanage. A few of the fosterhomes were fairly abusive and filthy.

I never intended to look for my biological mother. My twin sister looked her up as soon as we turned 18. She was a drunk and lived a very different lifestyle. She had gone on to have another child that she kept and both of us girls were pretty jealous of the little half-sister.

I am glad you will be able to have a relationship with your mother. Not all adoption stories end like a fairytale, mine sure didn't.

A New Parent's Surprising Look at Birth Control - Blog Entry

27 Jul 2006 02:58 PM

Interesting article. I became a grandmother again this week and we were in the hospital room discussing future contraception methods. I had no idea the IUD was still around. Of course it has been improved and is supposed to provide hormone replacement nowadays. My foster-daughter plans to use this method. Apparently you have to wait until your six-week check up to have it implanted after childbirth.

When it comes to effective birth control I am not the one to ask. All I had to do was be in the same room with my husband. Maintaining the pregnancy was my problem. I found out years later that my frequent miscarriages were quite typical of people with Lupus. At the time I had no idea I had the autoimmune disease. It took several years for me to get worsening symptoms and then finally, a diagnosis.

I wish you had mentioned that none of these methods will protect a woman from STD's.

Brad and Angelina's Wax Baby - Blog Entry

My goodness. Thirty bucks to see a vinyl/wax baby Shiloh. Then you have to pay another dollar to take a picture holding the creepy wax baby. Ewwww. Well, you will not catch me touching the thing. I am pleased for the couple. I think they are both beautiful people. Someone told me a long time ago that when two attractive people have children, the baby usually turns out a little unattractive; but when one attractive person pairs up with a slightly homely person they can make quite lovely children.

I've seen this happen with friends of mine. The husband wasn't very good looking but the children came out cuter than imaginable.

Diabetic Neuropathy - Blog Entry

27 Jul 2006 06:29 AM

As a woman with neuropathy I feel I must respond to this well written article. Your checklist is very good. I do not have Diabetes, yet I have a progressive form of neuropathy which has caused my feet to get more and more numb over the past six years and causes me a great deal of nerve pain.

I am completely devoted to checking my feet daily for sores or cuts since I cannot feel if I get a pebble on the bottom of my feet. I always wear good breathable socks and/or slippers around the house.

For some people with neuropathy it is impossible to wear shoes, even specially designed shoes. I am only able to wear slip on shoes, nothing that comes up over the ankle. This makes it rather difficult to go out in the winter. I can wear a snow boot for about a half hour at a time before the pain is unbearable. I keep the slip-on shoes in my car and switch just before I arrive at my destination.

One thing I would tell people who suffer with neuropathy. Please do NOT allow your doctor to talk you into getting a nerve biopsy. Unfortunately, I consented to this minor surgery in an effort to find out more answers and I have had more pain since the surgery. Though it is only a half inch scar on my right ankle the swelling has never gone away. My ankle is usually swollen about 4 inches which is the main reason I cannot wear shoes.

In any case, your blog gives some amazing information.

Overcoming Worry - Blog Entry

27 Jul 2006 06:13 AM

How ironic! I am currently reading the book of Matthew this week. We all have trouble with anxiety now and then. Some of us have more trouble in this area than others. I have had to really teach myself to let things go since becoming disabled. I don't want to be bitter and depressed all of the time.

It would be great to do a secondary article on this subject and actually list some deeper strategies for relieving stress and anxiety once you have given in to anxiety. I plan to do some articles on stress and anxiety myself. (I applied to be a blogger yesterday--cross your fingers for me)

It is always good to see other Christians setting a good example for others on the Internet. Thanks for sharing this wonderful message.

Click: A Universal Life Remote? - Blog Entry

27 Jul 2006 04:22 AM

I'm glad I came across your review. I actually thought about going to the theater to see this movie. (I rarely go out to see movies, since I cannot pause when I need a snack or bathroom break) I thought I couldn't wait for this movie to come out on DVD. I heard from a trusted friend that she thought the movie had two or three laughs but was not as funny as the commercials. Now I am even more convinced. I'm with you though.... I want one of those clickers. I have a few people in my life I would like to mute now and then. It seems a trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond is in order. (smile)

Choosing better sleep habits - Blog Entry

26 Jul 2006 08:41 AM

Great information! I have a friend who struggles with sleep issues. I did a little research myself and found some fascinating information. She was very interested in Holistic approaches to sleep. I found a healthy alternative to medication called Melatonin. It has worked quite well for my friend. She doesn't take it nightly, however, when she does need something to help her sleep it has been very effective.
