This blog is part of the series that focuses on the candidates who are running for President of the United States in the 2016 election. This blog focuses on Marco Rubio.
Marco Rubio is the son of Cuban immigrants. He started out as a City Commissioner for West Miami. In 2000, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. In 2006, he became the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. Marco Rubio became a United States Senator in 2011.
Health Care
According to his official website Marco Rubio believes “that Obamacare cannot be fixed and must be fully repealed and replaced”. He notes that doing so would leave millions without health insurance. To prevent that, Marco Rubio has created a three part plan.
First, he wants to provide “an advancable, refundable, tax credit that all Americans can use to purchase health insurance”. Second, he wants to allow Americans to purchase health insurance across state lines and to ensure that Americans with pre-existing conditions find coverage through their state’s federally-supported actuarily-sound high risk pools. Third, he wants to make Medicaid a per-capita cap system, and wants to transition Medicare into a premium support system (like Medicare part D).
Women’s Health Care
According to his official website Marco Rubio believes that Roe v Wade should be overturned. The Guardian reported that Marco Rubio doesn’t believe abortion should ever occur – not even in cases of rape or incest.
Talking Points Memo reported that Marco Rubio said “by 2020, Planned Parenthood doesn’t receive a penny from federal government.” Independent Journal reported that Marco Rubio does not want to ban any contraception efforts.
Immigration
On his Senate website he has information about the “Border, Security, Economic Opportunity, & Immigration Modernization Act of 2013”. He wants to build a fence along the U.S – Mexico border, a universal e-verify system, and a visa exit system.
It also included a system for undocumented immigrants to become legal immigrants (by going to “the back of the line” behind legal immigrants and paying fines). Children who were brought to the United States illegally by their parents would be eligible for permanent residence in five years and citizenship immediately after.
Education
On his official website, he says he wants to overhaul higher education. He wants to reform the accreditation system by exposing it to market forces of choice and comparison.
He will require schools to tell students how much they can expect to earn with a given degree before the student takes out a loan for it. He also wants to open financial aid for students who want to go to school at night, on weekends, or online. Marco Rubio wants to tie traditional loan repayment to each graduate’s income.
