Looking for something fun for the kids to do this month? Entertainment doesn’t always have to be expensive. If you know where to look, you can find frugal and free events that are designed for kids to participate in. Here’s a quick list of ones to check out.
St. Patrick’s Day Parades
The most kid-friendly part of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration would be, without a doubt, the St. Patrick’s Day parade! Check your local newspaper (or their website) to learn about when and where a parade will take place near you. St. Patrick’s Day is March 17, so parades could be happening March 15 – 17 this year (to fit into the weekend). Parades are always free to watch!
Lakeshore Learning
Lakeshore offers free kid’s craft events from 11:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. It is my understanding that in order for your child to participate, you must do at least a little shopping in the store. Seems fair enough! Here’s what they have coming up this month:
March 16: “Fluttering Butterflies” – Kids add 3D butterflies to a background scene that “has every color of the rainbow.
March 23: “Spring is in the Air!” – Kids make a door hanger with a cute springtime nest that they must put together.
March 30: “Cute as a Bug!” – Kids create a basket that is resembles a butterfly.
Lowe’s
Lowe’s offers free Kids Clinics. They get to build a wooden project, and receive a free apron, goggles, patch, and more. A parent must register their children in order to have them participate. Here’s what they have going on this month:
March 23: “The Croods: Piranhakeet Chomper” – A wooden kit inspired by the DreamWorks Animation movie called “The Croods”. It looks like a cartoonish cross between a parakeet and a piranha. They have another “The Croods” inspired craft coming up in April.
Michaels
Michaels used to offer their kid events for free, but it appears that they now cost $2.00 per child. That’s not bad, for 30 minutes of craft time!
March 23: “Easter Egg Mosaic by Perler Beads” – Kids can create a lovely paper and mosaic Easter Egg that they can design themselves.
March 30: “Hatching Chick” – Kids can make an Easter Egg that is attached to a clothespin. It can open and close. Inside, is a cute craft chick.
