He may say that all he wants for Father’s Day is a long nap, but if you have young children at home, they’ll want to give Dad more than some quiet time on Sunday.
Put your kids’ energy and enthusiasm to good use by having them assist you make the following easy, affordable and fun Father’s Day gifts:
POTATO STAMP SHIRT
Materials:
- One white t-shirt
- Large piece of cardboard
- Bag of large potatoes
- Cookie cutters (use shapes that will match dad’s interests, including dogs, trains, stars, sailboats, hearts, balls, or letters that spell out special words, such as “love” or “hugs”)
- Craft knife
- Fabric paint in a variety of colors
- Paint brush
- Scrap paper
Directions:
- Insert the cardboard piece inside the t-shirt. This will keep paint from leaking through to the other side of the shirt.
- Cut the potatoes in half with the knife.
- Press the cookie cutter into the potatoes.
- Use the knife to cut around the cookie cutter. The design should sit at least a half-inch from the remainder of the potato.
- Remove the cookie cutter from the potato.
- Coat the potato stamp with a liberal amount of paint.
- Have your kids stamp the designs onto the shirt. If there’s too much paint on the potato stamp, use the scrap piece of paper as a blotter.
- When your children are done designing the shirt,hang it outside to dry completely before presenting it to Dad.
SOLAR S’MORE MAKER
Materials:
- Large shoebox with lid
- Heavy-duty aluminum foil
- Oven bag
- Black spray paint
- Aluminum foil
- Duct tape
- Scissors
Directions:
- Spray an even coat of black paint on the inside of the box.
- Allow the paint to completely dry.
- Cut a large rectangle out of the shoebox lid.
- Cut the oven bag to fit in the shoebox lid.
- Tape the bag onto the lid, so it looks like the lid has a window.
- When you are ready to use the s’more maker, stack chocolate and marshmallows in between two graham crackers.
- Wrap up the s’mores in heavy-duty aluminum foil.
- Place the foil wrapped s’mores inside the shoebox.
- Put the lid on the box.
- Place the box in direct sunlight.
- Wait an hour and then carefully remove the s’mores from the box and enjoy with Dad.
