Affordable Holiday Fun

For most American families, Labor Day weekend is the last hurrah of the summer. It’s a time set aside for picnics, parties and last-minute back-to-school shopping. Of course, the latter is no fun and the two former options can be pricey if you aren’t careful. So, what can you do to make the last long weekend of summer memorable if you don’t have money to burn? Here are some ideas: Dress-Up: This idea is perfect for young kids who enjoy imaginary play. Collect clothes from around the house that can double as uniforms. You can help your children celebrate the … Continue reading

For most families, the long holiday weekend is the last chance to relax and enjoy each other’s company without the stress of homework, scheduled sporting events and other school-related functions. Fortunately, you can have a blast bidding summer a fond farewell, bond with your family and preserve your budget, all at the same time. Here’s how: … Continue reading

Johnny Appleseed Day Fun

I am very aware that Johnny Appleseed Day was yesterday, but, how much fun would it be to celebrate the event all! week! long! Yeah, my 7-year-old didn’t buy it either, especially since I made the suggestion after forgetting to send apple treats to school yesterday. There’s nothing fun about being labeled “That Mom.” The one who can’t remember to place pre-packaged applesauce into her only kid’s backpack. The fun part comes in trying to make up for my mistake. As my daughter shared tidbits about John Chapman (a.k.a. Johnny Appleseed) and the orchards he planted in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, … Continue reading

Disney D23 Expo Report, Pt. 2

The hottest panels at D23 were for companies Disney recently acquired, like Pixar and Marvel On Tuesday I looked at the exciting news about Pixar’s next projects that came out of Disney’s D23 convention. Today I’m going to wrap up my examination of the reports from D23. Now it’s time for the Muppets. D23 didn’t tell us a lot about the film that we don’t already know from the movie’s many trailers, but the two previewed clips cement what we’d suspected: that this is the most Muppet-y Muppets film we’ve had in a long time. The first clip expanded on … Continue reading

Fun Chocolate Thanksgiving Treats

My best friend from Hawaii and her husband will be joining us for Thanksgiving this year. I couldn’t be happier. We’re already planning a special feast and my 6-year-old is thrilled to put her first grade Thanksgiving-theme crafts on display for all to see. Given that our friends are traveling such a long way to celebrate the holiday with us, we thought it would be nice to incorporate some of their favorite foods into the meal and decor. For example, since my BFF’s husband is a chocoholic we’re planning to make a special chocolate tart to add to the dessert … Continue reading

Optimizing Our Errands 2

This is part 2 of a 2-part series. If you missed the first article earlier today, click here: Optimizing Our Errands. After lunch, we visited the library to return books and stock up on enough reading and listening material to last us six weeks (the maximum amount of time we can hold items). I estimate that getting extra books and CDs shaved off at least one extra library trip. I decided not to take out any DVDs, since these are due in three days time and would require an extra trip back to the library. We have plenty of movies … Continue reading

PETitionz.org: Your Link to Voicing Pet Food Recall Concerns

Are you upset about the recent Menu Foods pet recall and the continuing search for clues as to why it happened? Do you feel procedures should be reevaluated and/or upgraded so something like this can’t happen again? Want to do something about it? You’re not alone. Built in just five days, Ron Smith, together with the help of volunteers, launched PETitionz.org on April 1. I found out about it thanks to a comment Mr. Smith left on a Week in Review blog not too long ago. I contacted him and asked if he would consider being featured in a blog … Continue reading

Family Fun: The Magazine

I’ve seen all kinds of websites, but I didn’t know there was a print magazine called Family Fun, until I saw it in my dentist’s waiting room yesterday. I had to smile despite the hideous pain from my toothache. I decided to look it up today. They offer all kinds of ideas from parties, crafts, printables, games, and of course, you can subscribe to the magazine via the Family Fun website as well. One of the cute things I saw in the print version was a section with fun food ideas. Well, making it fun is the best way to … Continue reading
