Your Baby's Vocabulary - Blog Entry

31 Mar 2009 09:36 AM

I am a psychology student and we learned a lot of facts about language in children. We learned that there is a critical period in which children should start learning language due to brain maturation, myelination, and social interaction. We also learnied the characteristics and achievments in language with each age. in children 2 years of age they know 100-2000 words, and their sentence length is 2 to 6 words. In children 3 years of age they know 1,000-5,000 words, and their sentence length is 3 to 6 words. In children 4 years of age they know 3,000 to 10,000 words and their sentence length is 5 to 20 words. Lastly in children 5 years of age they know 5,000 to 20,000 words and their sentence length seems unending sometimes. As experienced parents do you find this to be true information or is it different with every child?

Talking About Tough Issues: Child Abuse - Blog Entry

31 Mar 2009 09:22 AM

i am a psychology student and we talked about child abuse in class and the warning signs in children that come with it. these warning signs include slowgrowth, immature communuication, lack of curiosity, and unusual social interaction. We also learned that parents who are more likely to abuse their children are less trusting, less self assured, less adaptable, tend to see the world as hostile, misinterpret their childs communications, may have been abused themselves, or drug dependency. Do you believe that this is true for most cases? or is child abuse something that changes and is differenet with each type of person?

Mothers Determine How Well Father Takes Care of Baby - Blog Entry

I am a psychology student and we learned that fathers enhance the childs social and emotional development. It is also said that fathers prevoke more laughter than mothers in their children. We also learned that fathers are adept at helping infants modulate their childs anger. What is interesting is this example of teenagers are less likely to lash out at friends and authorities if, as infants, they experienced a warm responsive relationship with their fathers. When it comes to attachment they are either equally attached to both parents or more attached to their mother or more attached to their father. We learned that close relationships with fathers helps with a childs expressions of emotions, and fathers also enourage their children to explore. As a student that doesnt have children I want to know if you parents think that this information is accurate.

My question is in the early years does what they eat really effect how they grow or is it more genetics?

My Own Theories on Baby Memories - Blog Entry

This blog is very interesting to me. It makes me think that maybe my fears that I have now in my teenage years are from experinces I had as a baby.I am afraid of horses but I have absolutly no reason to, untill I asked my mom one day. She explained to me that when I was about a year old we went camping, while sitting in the car a horse put its head in my window and I guess that apparently scared me but now i have a reason for why I am scared of horses.

How Long Do You Have to Worry About SIDS? - Blog Entry

24 Feb 2009 04:06 PM

I am also a psychology student taknig and child an adolescent development class in college. I agree with all of the statements. Even though I am not yet a parent the idea of having my healthy baby suddenly dieing from SIDS. It is a risk that already scares me just for the idea that it could happen any where and any time and it has nothing to do with the actual health of the baby. Just from my experince with family members and friends that have newborns they always want to buy cute pillows, stuffed animals and blankets for their newborns. By reading this post I really realize that although this may be a fun thing to buy for your baby its not safe at all and it is definatly something I will definatly be telling everyone I know with babies.
