I have been watching this issue and plan to write more blogs if anything major comes as a result! Alcohol Consumption and Pregnancy21 Sep 2006 11:11 AM Thank you for writing this article! Our daughter was adopted at the age of 5 and was just Diagnosed with Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Most people assume that Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is the only affect that may result from alcohol consumption...However, this is just the most extreme end of the spectrum. There is GREAT damage to the unborn baby and many time this damage is NOT seen by the physical signs the FAS might show. I will be writing some Blogs about ARND (Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmentsl Disorders) during the next few weeks and will link to this blog when I do... Thank you for putting out this warning..... It has been very difficult to watch my little girl suffer from consequences she is Not responsible for causing. Strategies To Improve Coping for Kids--STICK It to ADHD21 Sep 2006 10:15 AM Diane, I am waiting for the phone to ring so I can go pick up our first box! I can't wait to see if this is an effective solution too! I have heard that some patch medications have problems for some people. Skin irritation or itching being the number one problem. I have also heard that for some people patches don't seem to stick as long as they should! Isn't the birth control patch supposed to stay on for a week? I don't think I would be able to stand something stuck on my skin for a week.... The Daytrana patch is daily and I am wondering how it will hold up to Soccer Practice or if a child who tends to "pick" will leave it on all day? I will be updating this Blog as we see how this works. Tips on Teenage Insurance20 Sep 2006 08:29 PM The custodial parent and/or the parent who claims a child on their taxes is the residence the child lives in and this is where that teenage driver needs to be named on the policy in most states. This covers liability for that teenage driver and being named on one policy as a driver is more then enough. The problem would come in if neither parent named the child on their auto liability policy. In some cases, the other parents insurance company may ask for proof that the teenage driver is named on some one's insurance policy. As long as one parent is paying for auto liability insurance and both parents insurance companies are informed there would be no reason to insure a teenage driver on both policies for liability. You can read more about Young Drivers at the Insurance Blog and this blog is related: http://insurance.families.com/blog/when-to-drop-your-adult-child-from-your-auto-insurance What is PMI--Private Mortgage Insurance?20 Sep 2006 10:52 AM I wish I had better news! The next blog about PMI is not published and I am sorry to tell you that VA and FHA loans are excluded from the HPA. http://insurance.families.com/blog/the-homeowners-protection-act-hpa-of-1998 VA and FHA loans are regulated and controlled by Federal programs and are not conventional home loans. I will however, try to look into how PMI is managed with VA and FHA loans and write another Blog if I find out anything interesting or helpful. ADHD: To Medicate or not to Medicate--That is the Question20 Sep 2006 10:36 AM How Ironic! As you published this blog I was finishing up on my Blog: ADHD or Sleep Apnea? http://special-needs.families.com/blog/adhd-or-sleep-apnea Our 4 year old had a sleep study done in April and is Dx with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome, his issue may be sever enlarged tonsils. Before we even consider medication for symptoms which appear to be ADHD his doctor has ordered his tonsils to be removed. The theory is that his Apnea caused sleep deprivation which appears to look like ADHD during the day! Belonging, Identity and 'The' Reason Why: How I Decided Not to Search for My Birth Parents (cont'd.19 Sep 2006 05:10 PM My cousin chose to not search for many years and then out of the blue she was sent an email from someone who said he was her biological brother. That was 2 years ago and it has been a very interesting few years. My cousin still wishes she didn't have contact or never would have searched. She was happy and didn't seem to need the same kinds of answers that some people do. My ex-husband never wanted to search. The only reason he did was because our oldest son was insistent. My ex had reunion a little over a year ago. So far so good.... But, my son is rather devastated as he now realizes that he is NOT Scottish even though his last name screams it. My children wanted to know their biological grandparents, but now have huge mixed emotions. I think EVERY person has the RIGHT to search or NOT Search... I don't feel that one adopted person has the right to insist all other adopted people feel the same way they do. Should Textbooks Be Written To Include Homosexual Achievements?19 Sep 2006 04:57 PM I think that Sexuality issues should always be the responsibility of Parents to teach their children. I believe that in higher education such as college students have access to a more broad level of history and other information. For me as long as my children are at home and my responsibility to parent I would LIKE to have the right to teach them about all matters of sexuality. I only have this responsibility for a FEW years and then my role is done. I feel this way about a number of topics including religion, sexuality, and even other issues such as finances, and politics. I think that FIRST my child should have a chance to grow up in a home with consistent information is provided before being bombarded with EVERY other point of view... Give me some time to establish a foundation then they have the rest of their lives to develop their own opinions.... I think that I have done a great job as a mother with this attitude. I have two adult children age 22 and 23.... One conservative, republican, straight, Christian and One liberal, democrat, one-minded, Agnostic! There is plenty of time to form their own ideas, but during their childhood years, with my taxes paying for public education I want some of the more sensitive issues to be under my control.... Why You Won't Catch Me at a Nurse-In18 Sep 2006 10:03 PM I completely agree with you. I breastfed both of my older children in the 80's when it was just returning as an accepted way.... I never had a problem in public because even in San Diego I could cover myself and baby enough to not make a scene. Besides I never really liked the idea of other people's "stuff" falling on or around my baby.... No one ever asked me to stop because I didn't ATTRACT attention about it.... And personally I don't know why it is so important to make an issue of it. It is natural but, I feel there is no reason to turn it into a movement.... |
