So I am going to post a blog in the next hour or so covering this question. Make sure to check back for that!!!! About working from home with a child, did you read my blogs on that subject? That is a four-part mini series, and the link above is to the first part. I would read through all of that, and then if you still have questions, ask away. I *think* I covered the subject fairly well though. ;-) And don't worry about being demanding - I think that's a great question (obviously, or I wouldn't have spent four blogs trying to cover it!! LOL!) I think a lot of people go into the field thinking that it is going to be a walk in the park with young kids, and it really isn't. Sadly enough. I am so happy that this series has been helpful for you. That really does my heart good to hear that. :-) I tried to cover everything that I wished that I knew before I started into the MT world, and although I obviously haven't covered everything (oops!) I have tried hard to cover a lot of it, and it's great to hear that it's been helpful to others. If you have any other questions or if you think I missed another topic, please either put it in the comment section or e-mail me at Hava L {at} Families dot com - I love to help out wherever I can! Havs Working From Home Gives You Variety - Blog Entry20 Jul 2007 01:52 PM Sharyl, I'm so glad that you really enjoyed my blogs!!! :-D That makes my day. I'm really busy packing my house up today (we're moving first thing in the morning) but I decided to take a break from packing and check my e-mail, where I found your comment. Thank you for cheering me up after my long day. ;-) If you're interested in starting your own blog, I'll be posting blogs about how to actually get started doing that on Monday and they'll be going up all of next week and perhaps the week after. So definitely keep checking back. As for courthouse records, if you do sign up with any of the companies that I highlighted on here (Sunlark, Wolfgang, or AMD) tell them that I, the blogger at Families.com, sent you - they'll be glad to know that the time they spent being interviewed by me was time well spent. :-) I love to see them get new workers. If you have any questions or problems, either post them here or e-mail me at Hava L {at} Families dot com - I'm always happy to help however I can. :-) Havs Staying at a Job Too Long - Blog Entry12 Jul 2007 02:36 PM Update: My husband and I went to the new city on Tuesday and he went job hunting. He found a great job with wonderful potential and he is thrilled beyond words to get started there. I'm just thrilled to pieces that he got a job so easily! So y'all can guess what I'll be doing for the next two weeks: Packing, packing, and more packing! LOL! Thanks for reading, Havs Alli-oops! Alli Users Commiserate Over Side Effects - Blog Entry07 Jul 2007 10:01 AM I saw this on sale at Wal-Mart the other day, and wondered about it. Thank you for this article - it made me laugh, AND me me swear off Alli!!!! Why you would purposefully take something that causes you that bad of diarrhea is honestly beyond me, but I guess people are pretty desperate to lose weight. :-P Thanks for the GREAT blog!!! :-D Hava A Question A Week: Are High Gas Prices Affecting Your Work Life? - Blog Entry26 Jun 2007 09:15 AM Hey, thanks for the feedback! Yes, these gas prices are about to be the death of us all, I think. I went on a trip this past week, visiting family, and I about died at the pump. I spent a lot more on gas than I had planned on spending, and it was tough on the budget. Uggh. About a home-based business, have you checked out the Home Biz blog on this site? I write strictly about Jobs, but there is a very active blog that covers Home Biz really well, because the ladies who write there are walking the walk - they have either had large home businesses in the past or are currently running a home business. I think you would really enjoy that blog. :-) Check it out here: http://home-business.families.com/blog/ If you've already been over there, just ignore me. ;-) Good luck in your goal of working from home. I do it, and I LOVE IT! :-D Hava Working From Home Gives You Variety - Blog Entry18 Jun 2007 01:49 PM No, I've never been asked for ID. You'll simply go in and ask for the Public Access Computers (PACs.) In every county I have ever been in, they have said, "They're right back here; do you know how to look things up on it?" I would tell them no, they would show me, and then they would leave alone to get my work done. Every county has them, and they are being used all day long by different people. The county workers won't even blink when you ask to use them. That's what they are there for - for the public to use. HTH, and I happen to be online right now, so if you have any more questions, fire away! I'll try to answer right back. Havs Working From Home Gives You Variety - Blog Entry14 Jun 2007 09:01 AM Hey, I'm just glad I could help! An online job doing data entry sounds pretty promising - it might be a good source of side income, as long as you're not trying to rely on it for your living expenses. You always want as many "baskets" as possible, so it's good to have small side jobs like that. Keep that job, and then look for other "baskets." Give me updates when you have a moment!! Hava Working From Home Gives You Variety - Blog Entry13 Jun 2007 04:03 PM Hi GinForMan, your other comment did not go through, so I'm glad you reposted. :-) When you search for jobs online, make sure that when you see the ads asking you to pay money, that you DON'T DO IT! That's fine if you're wanting to have a home business, but a J-O-B from home shouldn't cost you money. There are a few very, very rare exceptions to that rule (usually having to do with background checks.) If you are ever asked to pay money, make sure to do your research on the company in forums and through Google to make sure they are legit. 99.999% of the time, they won't be. As for selling wedding stuff on eBay, have you looked at http://www.etsy.com/index.php instead? They are focused more on the craft items instead of all items like eBay has set up, and I have heard some really good things about them. You say you're not making any money pulling records at courthouses. Can I ask which company you're working for? I did an entire series on courthouse research, which you can find the directory to that series here: http://employment.families.com/blog/courthouse-research-blogs-in-summary Every blog I wrote on Courthouse Research will be linked to on that page, and if you read all of those blogs, you'll know everything I know about the industry. ;-) You seem to have a passion for writing - have you looked at blogging? I was JUST about to start a series on blogging as a job from home, and actually, you can make quite good money doing it. You could blog about homeschooling which is always a huge topic, or crafts, and then link to your selling page at eBay or Etsy and get sales that way. It's all about making the jobs work together to compliment each other. I hope that helped. If you have any more questions, ask away! Hava Creating an Office in Your Closet - Blog Entry02 Jun 2007 03:24 PM That's a good idea. We don't have the folding doors that open off to the side and stay out of the way - ours are on a track, there are two of them, and either they are slid apart so they are covering the whole front of the closet, or they are slid either to the right or to the left so you can get into one side of the closet or the other. If our closet doors had been folding doors, we probably would have tried something like your set-up - it would have kept the room looking "neat" because I would have been able to hide the desk. Thanks for the feedback! Havs When Your Ethics and Your Income Collide - Blog Entry01 Jun 2007 10:49 PM This is (kind of) on topic: When I worked at Burger King as a teenager, we were required to offer upsales to all of our customers. If they wanted a hamburger, we asked them if they wanted cheese and bacon on it. If they wanted a medium drink, we asked if they wanted to upsize it. Etc. This guy came into BK and order four meals. I asked him if he wanted the cheese and the bacon. Yes. Did he want the super size? Yes. I told him the total, and the look on his face broke my heart. It was a lot more than he had planned on paying. As he pulled his wallet out of his back pocket, I suddenly realized (dumb 16 year old that I was) that he was hispanic, and most likely did not understand most of what I had been saying. His English had been very broken and hard to understand, and I should have known that he didn't understand the questions I was asking. I know that for more people, it wouldn't have been such a big deal, but to me, I felt *really* bad. He had spent probably $10 to $15 more than he should have by time I was done offering all of these upsells. I could tell by the look on his face that he was surprised and upset about the price, but that he was too proud to say anything. I didn't know how to explain to him that I was sorry, and that I would take all of the extras off, so I let him pay and walk off. I still feel guilty about that. So yeah, Traci, I do understand. I would have felt the same way you did. Havs |
