Laptops and Courthouse Research - Blog Entry

14 Apr 2007 12:56 PM

Wow, that's pretty cool! None of the counties around here offer anything like that. I have to ask: When you go to the courthouse, do you put the address part into the computer or do you write it on the printout? I'm just wondering because the program that I was using while a researcher would not allow me to go backwards through the items I had already put in, so it wouldn't have been possible for me to put in only the addresses and then fill everything else in later.

Since you are driving 2 hours just to get to the courthouse, this kind of thing would be a HUGE time and money saver. I'm glad you figured out how to do this--thanks for sharing!

Jobs now has an RSS Feed! - Blog Entry

05 Apr 2007 08:39 PM

Wow, I am showing my blond roots. I guess since I had never paid attention to RSS feeds before, I didn't notice them on Families before. I just did a search of Families and found that there are quite a few posts about the fact that there are RSS feeds for the individual blogs here at Families. I don't know how on earth I missed that before.

Chalk this up as a blond moment for a natural brunette. I'm having more and more of these lately. :-P

Unhealthy Obsessions: Me and My Computer - Blog Entry

04 Apr 2007 03:40 PM

LOL! I don't mind answering that at all. I'm 26--just turned that last month. I remember when I was in elementary school (probably fifth or sixth grade) I heard a report on the news about how the Internet was becoming more popular as time passed, and the experts even envisioned a day when people would be able to get onto the computer to check the balance on their checking account! LOLOL! I remember thinking at the time that that sounded pretty crazy, but then again, we didn't have a computer hooked up to the Internet at that point. We did have a little Commodore 64 that we played games on, but nothing connected to the Internet.

We moved, and when I was around 12 or 13 years old, we finally got Internet. Back then, you had to watch how long you were on because they gave you a set amount of minutes to use each month, and when those were gone, you paid a HUGE price per minute after that. Just like cell phones now, except it was for the Internet. Does anyone else remember that? It seems crazy now, but I'm hoping the same thing will happen with cell phones--that we'll all eventually have unlimited minutes on our cell plans, and the idea of only having a set amount to use each month will be ludicrous.

Re: computer anon club--that's hilarious! I hereby nominate you president, and I'll be secretary. That means I'll have to send lots of e-mails to people telling them when we're going to meet next, via Internet teleconferencing, of course. ;-) Anyone want to be vice-president? :-P

Thanks for the laughs, Valorie. :-D

Dad's Losing It: How have you been? - Blog Entry

03 Apr 2007 08:49 PM

I thought maybe it was just me. I have been eating A LOT lately. Chex Mix (two bags in four days) and (this is so strange, but true) I have taken to eating uncooked crescent rolls. You know those tubes you buy at the store and they POP! when you open them, by Pillsbury? I will open up a can, sit on the couch and eat them, dipping them in cinnamon and sugar with every bite. I eat the entire can in one sitting. I have no idea how many calories are in one of those cans, nor do I want to think about it. I think it's a throwback to making bread with my mom, and eating the raw dough while doing it. I love raw dough, but an entire can??! Sheesh.

And I have been eating ice cream like a maniac. I get the really good stuff (Breyers Rocky Road) and pour dark chocolate syrup on it (love dark chocolate!) I sprinkle mini chocolate chips on top of that, and then DIG IN! I have been eating a bowl every night, which is SO not good.

About the only positive thing I have been doing is going walking in the morning with a friend. If I stopped that, I would probably gain 20 pounds in two weeks. As it is, I'm sure I'm gaining 20 pounds every four weeks. :-P

Somebody save me!!

Leave Good Enough Alone - Blog Entry

03 Apr 2007 10:51 AM

Another update (for those who care--the rest, feel free to ignore me! :-P) I pulled that ignored external hard drive off the shelf, and found that I had done a back up in August of 2006. Not exactly last week, but at least it was something for me to work off of. It isn't taking me as long to get things up to date as I thought they would--I should have it done by the end of today, hopefully. At which point I will do a back up. LOL!

So if you don't see another blog from me today, you'll know where I am...

Leave Good Enough Alone - Blog Entry

03 Apr 2007 08:13 AM

Thanks for the well wishes, but unfortunately, it didn't happen. He tried, but I waited too long to contact him (I didn't realize what I did for several days) and by that point, the files were actually gone gone. There is gone, and then there is gone gone. If you delete a file, empty your trash bin, and then realize you did something stupid (you obviously didn't heed my advice for starters! :-P) then a computer geek can do a file recovery thingy using a special disk. But once you start writing more files by creating new Word documents, etc, then these new files write over the old ones, and then they are truly gone gone.

And since I am a writer and creating new Word (or Open Office) files is what I do for a living, even a few days was too many. Three? Four? years of financial data, erased, and no way of ever getting it back. It will be all right. At least I have learned a lesson: Don't do something stupid!

LOL!

Top 5 Firefox Add-ons You Need to Enhance Your Browsing Experience - Blog Entry

Hey, no problem! I'm glad it was helpful to you! :-) I cannot imagine using IE--they force you to have the same browser for everyone, no customization at all. That's crazy to me.

Thanks for the comment!

What's So Great About Firefox Anyway? - Blog Entry

28 Mar 2007 07:16 PM

Thanks for the feedback, Jeff! It's good to see another Firefox fan on the site. Many people use IE because it came with their machine, and they figure why fix something that isn't broken. The sad part is, it is broken, they just don't know it! I used to use IE, and then I "saw the light." LOL! I sure am glad, because there are many awesome features that Firefox offers, that IE doesn't come even close to touching.

I have an entire series posting over the next several days about Firefox, the extensions, etc, so make sure to check back!
