You were much more optomistic (and on top of things!) than I was! LOL! When I first applied, I was working from home and trying to bring in more money each month, so I started looking for a steady writing job to do on the side, and Families seemed like the perfect job for me. I applied but then I never heard back, and I in fact utterly forgot that I had even applied at Families. (FYI: I think Lisa's method of hiring bloggers has completely changed--I don't think people will go for months now without hearing anything in return. Just so ya know...) Anyway, I went back to work in a bricks and mortar building a month or two later because I had decided that working from home wasn't for me, and then in November, I get this e-mail about how I was hired on as a Jobs blogger, if I wanted the job. I thought, "Jobs blogger? Families? What is this?!" I read through the e-mails, and then came onto the site and looked around. I started to vaguely remember what had happened, and I thought, "Okay, I'll do it," and I wrote back with a yes. At the time, I don't think I had the faintest clue of what I was getting myself into :-P but the thought of being paid to write was just too great to resist. Luckily, I have really liked this job so far, and I hope to have it for a long time to come. :-) Have a great night, all! Havs Nepotism in the Workplace - Blog Entry16 Feb 2007 09:19 PM Ya know Julie, I think you're exactly right, this is job security. I spent a good part of the day yesterday correcting payroll so that the checks going out today would be correct. And would you believe, this is the first time since I have started at this company that we have not had someone screaming and yelling about their paycheck. We had one gal whose paycheck was incorrect--I didn't check hers thoroughly enough, and so it slipped through the cracks. The funny part was, there were two mistakes on her payroll, and I did find the one, just not the other. Anyway, I do know that the owner was excited because there weren't a bunch of checks to rewrite, like there normally is. Last pay period, we had five paychecks incorrect, where we had shorted people a total of 120+ hours all together. One guy was missing 55 hours on his paycheck, out of 77. So today was a vast, *vast* improvement over the last one, and all of the ones before that. It's just frustrating to me that I have to do this each time. Grrr... :-P Oh well, thus is life. I should probably get a new job before somehow these mistakes get blamed on me and I get the shaft because of it. That would be no fun. :-( Havs Nepotism in the Workplace - Blog Entry16 Feb 2007 01:41 PM That wouldn't be such a bad idea, except this is such a small company there really isn't any "fake jobs" that we could give to the person. If we were a larger company, we could bury the person in something like office supply ordering or something, but we just don't have anything like that to hand off. I wish we did. I really like the person *as* a person--easy to get along with, funny, incredibly smart, etc. There just isn't any incentive for the person to try or do anything. And I think that's one of the biggest reasons that nepotism fails: Like communism, there is no incentive for that person to try, to stretch, to push themselves, let alone do the basics of the job. In some cases, yes it does work, and there are no problems with it. But the vast majority of the time, it doesn't seem to work out, at least not in the cases I have seen firsthand. This is the third time I have had to deal with nepotism in the workplace, and all three times were dismal failures. I've about given up on the concept. :-( Thanks for the feedback, and the idea. If anyone has anymore feedback, I would love to hear it! Havs The Trend to Open Adoption - Blog Entry15 Feb 2007 07:20 PM I think Julie made a good point--if this lady wasn't the birth mother, would you ever consider letting her have anything to do with your children? NO! This is the sort of person who you would work your hardest to keep your children away from. If someone is going to be a bad influence on your children, then you need to keep them away your children, blood ties or not. Stick to your guns! Hava Another Baby Left With Boyfriend Tragedy - Blog Entry15 Feb 2007 07:16 PM Ed, that is so tough. It's hard when something hits home like that. I too live in a small town, and this past year when a girl at the local high school was killed by her classmates, it really hit this town hard, because we aren't supposed to have things like that happen to us, KWIM? Thanks for the blog. And PS, you're right about how the jail time is going to be rough for the boyfriend. I don't have a whole lot of pity for him though..... :-( Havs Eragon - Blog Entry14 Feb 2007 10:06 PM I just got home from my date with my hubby for Valentine's Day, and I just have to say how much I absolutely hated this movie. I had loved both of the books, and was really excited to see the movie. That excitement quickly turned to horror as I watched the story line get butchered to pieces. I do agree that the dragon was well-done (I too thought that she was more blue though--funny that!) but that's about as far as my compliments will go. The scenery was horrible, the directing worse, and who on this green earth wrote that script??? A drunk man off the street? Sorry, I just can't help myself--this is one of the worst fantasy movies I have ever seen, and I am rather fond of the genre. Or at least I was, until tonight. I can say that most likely children would like the movie, but kids are well known for liking strange things (Teletubbies, anyone?) No adult in their right mind should ever waste their money on this movie, though. They didn't even attempt to stay true to the story, which drove me crazy to no end. If you have $20 that you wouldn't mind setting on fire and watching burn, then go ahead and watch this movie. Otherwise, I would stay away. :-( My two cents... Havs You're Hired! - Blog Entry13 Feb 2007 07:21 PM Oh, I'm sorry I missed that before! I will have to go check out your blog so I don't repeat what you are writing--I think the business and the job blogs are fairly similar in topic, KWIM? In fact, at one point, they discussed combining the two topics, but then decided against it. Anyway, I better get to writing. Have a great one! Havs You're Hired! - Blog Entry12 Feb 2007 11:16 AM Thanks! ;-) I'm glad you enjoyed the series. It has been a lot of fun to write! :-) What topic do you cover? Havs The Positives to Blogging for Families.com: Flexibility and Freedom! - Blog Entry08 Feb 2007 10:58 AM Hey, I'm glad you enjoy my blogs! It's sure a lot of fun to write them. Good luck in getting the job!!!! Havs The Positives to Blogging for Families.com: Flexibility and Freedom! - Blog Entry07 Feb 2007 04:33 PM I *do* cover that later on! ;-) I think it will be in the blog set to post on Sunday, although I am not ready to swear to that. It might be Saturday. Anyway, the answer is, Lisa tries to read each application and respond to them within a week of applying. If you haven't heard from her within two weeks, I would send a follow-up e-mail to find out what's going on. The end of the month and the beginning of the next month is a very crazy time, and she will be slower to respond during that time. HTH! Havs |
