Going Back to School - Blog Entry

17 Jan 2007 08:58 PM

Wow, Kori, I can't believe you lived through that! I don't think I have it in me to take that many credits at the same time, ESPECIALLY if I had three children! I would probably have a mental breakdown if I tried that! LOL! I'm proud of you for making it through that rough time.

Have you found that having the undergrad degree has made a big difference in your earning power? Even as a newbie to the teaching world, I will make about $10,000 more per year than I am right now, which is HUGE in rural Idaho. Plus I'll actually receive a payraise each year (which I have zero chance of receiving right now) and I'll receive bennies too, which I also have a zero chance of receiving at my current job. I know that many people say that teaching doesn't pay well, but considering that I have no desire to do the jobs that do command top salaries (scientists, lawyers, doctors, etc) and I have almost no chance of ever making more than $10 an hour with my current skill set, teaching actually seems like it will pay well, at least to me!

Of course, the chance to actually be a teacher is the best pay of all. I absolutely love children, and I am really excited to be able to finally pursue my dream.

Anyway, thanks for reading--I appreciate it! :-)

Going Back to School - Blog Entry

Wow, thanks brother! I will have to call you later and delve into your brain a bit more! I had no idea that schools gave out free money like that. I will have to call ISU tomorrow and see what help they can give me. I certainly don't have the money to simply pay for education out of pocket, but the chance to become an elementary teacher is worth it for me, even if I do have to take out loans. I will do my best not to though. That would be fantastic to graduate with no student loans.

Thanks again!

Don't Quit Your Day Job - Blog Entry

LOL! That's one way of dealing with it! I am not much of a shopper--actually, my husband is more likely to want to go to the mall to "look around" than I am. I think I have a defective gene in me or something. I really like being home, but not for days on end, and certainly not without ever stepping outside at all during that time. The human body needs fresh air and sunshine, I've decided!

Thanks for the feedback!

How Many Baskets Do You Have? - Blog Entry

12 Jan 2007 09:11 PM

Hey, my brother is reading my blog!!! Everyone, meet my handsome younger brother Josh. Everyone, this is Josh. I'm assuming Dad sent the link to my blogs to the family? I hope you are enjoying my blogs. :-) Speaking of you being envious, I feel it's my job as the Jobs blogger to tell you that you could get hired on as a blogger and work for Families.com also. If anyone reading this is interested, just write me and I'll send you an updated list of the current blog openings at Families.com.

And thanks for stopping by, brother! Talk to you later! :-)

PS You are right about both points, but A) America and Canada are the two largest competitors for online jobs (at least from what I have seen,) and B) Even though you were thinking in Spanish, I doubt you would have felt comfortable even then writing creatively in Spanish. So you are definitely right, but at the same time, I still think creative writing is one of the most "outsource-proof" jobs out there right now. Thanks for the feedback!!!! :-)

How Many Hours Are You Truly Working? - Blog Entry

12 Jan 2007 08:53 PM

Scary, huh? I truly thought that I was working all day long, and after I started keeping track, I was in shock. How on earth did I spend the entire day "working" and yet get nothing done? It really made me watch my time better. Time management makes a huge difference.

That's the truth! But people WANT to believe, so they do believe. It's tough to make people understand that if it sounds too good to be true, than it is!!!!

Random Job #217: Buying Books at Thrift Stores - Blog Entry

09 Jan 2007 09:35 PM

Hey Julie, thanks for the feedback! I didn't realize that thrift stores were doing that. I wonder why. If they sell the book to auctioneers or if they sell the book to a regular patron, they still make the same amount of money. In fact, they would probably sell more books to auctioneers in one transaction than they would to the average consumer. It seems like they would encourage this trend instead of trying to fight against it. Very interesting, either way.

Thanks for reading!

Don't Quit Your Day Job - Blog Entry

09 Jan 2007 08:39 PM

Thanks for the feedback, Jeff and Anna! I know that it seems a bit strange that I would have had such a hard time adjusting to being at home all the time, but for me, it was very confining and I had a hard staying sane, truly. I like the regularity of an office job, and am very content working the 9-5. We are lucky enough to work in a time where we can choose whether we want to work at home or in the office. :-) Thank heavens, eh?

Thanks for reading!

Another Example Of Bad Parenting - Blog Entry

01 Jan 2007 08:55 PM

Thanks for the article, Myra. This story is heartbreaking. I am considering adopting myself, and when I read articles like this, I can only hope that these kids make their way through the foster care system and into a new home where a set of adoptive parents who LOVE the children can take care of them. It makes me sick to my stomach and so ANGRY to read about this sort of thing. :-(

I'm so glad I could help you out! I thought it was a great idea, although I don't have time to do it personally. I too love law--I am a People's Court addict (every day at noon--you know what I'm watching while eating lunch!) so I thought this sounded like a lot of fun.

Good luck and if you have a second, I would love to hear how it goes!
