The Pitfalls of Running a Home Business - Blog Entry

23 Nov 2006 11:55 AM

Hi Debbi! I know this article is quite old, but I just found it today while doing a search on here. Just so everyone knows, Tiny Details (mentioned above) is actually a scam. They almost NEVER pay for the stuff that you send back to them. There are very, very few legit make-crafts-at-home biz opps out there, but Tiny Details is not one of those few. They have got numerous complaints against them with the BBB, and I hope they will be shut down soon, but who knows.

Anyway, I thought I would mention that. Have a great day, all!

Adoptive Couple Kept their Special Needs Children in Cages - Blog Entry

Great Kristyn, I look forward to reading the follow-up! And Anna, that is just bizarre. I don't understand that sort of thinking at all. When I was doing that Google search, I came across an article that talked about Nancy Thomas methods. Is that the type of therapy you were talking about? Because this article was very negative towards the Nancy Thomas methods, and talking about how extreme it is. I am just wondering if that is what you are thinking of also.

The strange part is, after reading this article, I watched Law and Order that night, and guess what the episode was about? An adoptive couple who locked their kids in cages, and did a rebirthing session with one of their children which killed the child. All completely made up, but it was just a very strange coincidence to watch that right after reading this. Things like this make me very angry, and very sad.

I just did a Google search to see what I could come up with--I was too curious to wait to see what you guys had to say! ;-) Turns out, they were getting paid $4000 a month to take care of the children (see here: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/child_abuse_and_recovery/118359) It looks like they have been charged with 16 counts of felony child endangerment (see here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,227048,00.html?sPage=fnc.national/crime) Their pretrial was set to start in September of this year, but I can't find anything on them since then. Knowing our courts system, nothing has happened since then.

Just thought you guys would want to know what happened. :-)

Thanks for the well-wishes, you guys! My hubby and I are quite excited about it. I am ready to adopt tomorrow, but unfortunately, the state is a bit slower than I am. ;-)

About payments, I know that in my state, for the age that I looking to adopt (5-9 year olds) you get paid $300 a month when you adopt the child until the child turns 18. Multiply that by 11, and you are looking at making $3300 a month. And in Idaho, you make $475 ($425? can't remember) for children over the age of 10 (or is it 12? I should really go look it up again.) Anyway, so the payments coming in would be at least $3300, if not a lot more, if this had happened in Idaho. I don't know about Ohio. So yes, that is fairly good money, although definitely not enough to get rich off of.

I guess if you add in the $10,000 tax credit, that would $110,000 in tax credits, which is obviously a lot of money. But still, it seems like there are easier ways to get rich. I don't know if this couple was in it for the money as much as I think this is one of those cases where the couple think that they're doing the kids a big favor because no one else will take them, so they will. But any person who was sane would realize it is better not to be adopted and live in foster care than to be adopted and live in a cage, but like I said before, this couple is insane. There really isn't any other word for it.

Did anyone do a follow-up to see what happened with this couple? Since this was in the CBS archives, I assume has happened since the story was first aired. Just curious...

Oh my gosh, this story makes me sick to my stomach. I cannot even imagine. My husband and I are looking at adoption right now (we have just barely started on the long and ardous journey on Friday) and as it stands right now, we have no plans to adopt more than one child from Health and Welfare at a time (meaning, if we adopt the first child and s/he settles in and becomes an integral part of the family without major problems, we would probably adopt another child in another couple of years.) I cannot even fathom trying to tackle three special needs children at once, let alone 11 of them.

This couple needs true mental help, and they need to be kept away from children for life--anyone who thinks children belong in cages is quite simply insane.
