A report titled #StatusOfMind was done by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH). They surveyed 1,500 young people about social media. Of the five social media platforms that were included in the survey, Instagram was found to have the worst effect on young people’s mental health. The #StatusOfMind report examined both the positive, and the negative, effects that social media has on young people’s health. The report included Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Snapchat. The report asked 1,500 young people, who were between the ages of 14 and 24 to rank what extent different social media platforms impacted certain … Continue reading

Facing Death and Making a Difference

In early December 2010, Jen Likness got a call that could change her life. She was getting her long awaited, much need lung transplant. Likness has cystic fibrosis. A lung transplant could save her life, although half of those who receive them won’t live longer than 5 years. That’s more time than she would have without one so the risk is worth the rewards more often than not. That’s a lot to carry and to consider for a young woman. Still, in the long months that she has been awaiting this moment, Likness wasn’t thinking about herself, but about the … Continue reading

Dogs, Unconditional Love and Mental Health

I read in the recent weekend paper where our local animal shelter had registered an alarming increase in the number of dogs and other pets being handed in because the owners could no longer keep them. Skyrocketing pressures on the family budget appear to have claimed yet another victim: The family pet. A spokesperson for the animal shelter said that the people who were surrendering their animals claimed that the increased cost of living was making it impossible to pay for the costs involved in keeping a pet. As well as an increase in the number of animals being dumped, … Continue reading

New Year’s Mental Health Resolutions

Whether you suffer from a pre-existing mental health condition or just plain-old garden variety stress, why not try a different type of New Year’s resolution this year? The resolution to improve your mental health. There isn’t anyone who couldn’t benefit from taking steps to improve their mental health, just as we could all benefit from a fitness regime makeover from time to time. Healthy Foods for Menopause

Menopause is a period in a woman’s life when it becomes even more important than normal to maintain a healthy diet. During menopause you loose estrogen, so it becomes imperative that you go have access to sufficient vitamins and minerals to boost your overall health and wellbeing. Aside from a loss of estrogen, you will also loose calcium more easily. This can set on (early) osteoporosis, a condition you should be careful about because over time it leads to brittle bones and other complications. If you know which foods can support your health during menopause, and you start eating more … Continue reading

Childcare, babies and mental health

Ever wondered whether childcare for babies and infants is beneficial for a child? Or is spending time with Mom more important for a baby’s emotional development? A new study from Australia sheds some light on this intriguing issue. Debates concerning whether an infant is better off being at home in parental care versus professional long-term daycare are highly emotive and fraught with inconsistencies due to the nature of the topic. Working parents, particularly single mothers who have little choice as to whether to return to work or not, usually suffer the most in regard to this issue. While some women … Continue reading

Friends and Mental Health (1)

It goes without saying that having good, stable friendships is important to your mental health. So how do you know which of your friends are contributing to your health and which are subtly, or not so subtly, undermining it? Most times we know instinctively which people are “good” for us. But sometimes it can be very hard to tell. We all know people who are cheery, positive, and fun to be with. We feel better when we are in their company. These people can increase our happiness levels on good days, and on the not-so-good days their presence can literally … Continue reading

Parent Training

If you have a child the old fashioned way there is no manual, there is no class that tells you how to deal with some of the issues that are sure to come up as the child grows. When you are going through the adoption process you go through what is called a PRIDE seminar. I am not sure what the PRIDE stands for but it is a very complete parenting training course. All parents should have to take parenting classes even if they are having biological children. There are so many issues covered during these weeks and weeks of … Continue reading
