Seasonal Firefighters Lack Health Insurance

The firefighters who are battling the fires in Colorado right now don’t have health insurance coverage. They are considered to be seasonal workers, which means that they don’t qualify for federal employer sponsored health insurance. Lack of health insurance coverage can bankrupt families. Firefighters are modern day superheroes. They rush in to smoke filled areas and homes, and battle large fires. They do this to protect the lives of people who often are complete strangers to them. They risk their own lives in order to protect the homes and natural resources that are threatened by a forest fire. Seasonal firefighters … Continue reading

Keep Pets Safe from Outdoor Seasonal Dangers

VPI has created a helpful list of 10 seasonal dangers to outdoor pets. When you go out into the snowy, Winter, weather, you probably bundle up. Obama Wants Seasonal Firefighters to Have Insurance

You might not realize it, but, the seasonal firefighters who were battling the fires in Colorado don’t have health insurance coverage. They can’t buy the federal insurance offered to full-time firefighters, either. President Obama has directed federal officials to let the seasonal firefighters buy insurance. Firefighters who work full-time, or year-round, are able to qualify for federal health insurance. I think it is fairly obvious why people need to have a good health insurance policy. The policy can cover the firefighter, his or her spouse, and their children. Seasonal firefighters, like the ones who were battling the fires in Colorado, … Continue reading

A Holiday Health Concern

This time of year it’s easy to get caught up in the holiday cheer. It’s infectious and the desire to spread that goodwill is encouraged. If you want to include your pets in the seasonal spirit, however, first consider these few words of caution. You might want to give your pet a special treat for the holidays, but depending on what that is it’s not a good idea. We let our guard down sometimes around our pets, and allow them to eat food we know isn’t directly harmful to them. And while doing so might not involve an emergency vet … Continue reading

Employer Based Health Insurance is Disappearing

A report done by Iowa Policy Project, which is a non-profit group, shows that it has become more difficult for people to find employer sponsored health insurance. Seasonal Affective Disorder

When I first got divorced I was sad. Not really depressed but probably more than just run of the mill sad. In the winter it was particularly bad, I went to work when it was dark and came home when it was dark. There were entire days I never saw the sun. When I wasn’t at work, I just wanted to sleep. I would come home from work, throw something together for dinner and then nap on the couch until Hailey woke me up for bed. After a few weeks I realized there was a problem, my house was a … Continue reading

Healthy Home, Healthy Air: Natural Air Pollution

While chemicals can impact the quality of your indoor air, nature can also be the culprit. You might think of nature as a pure and wholesome thing, and it certainly is. However, when too much nature accumulates on your floors, on your bedcovers and under the furniture, it can cause allergies. You Can be Frugal and Eat Healthy Organic

I wrote about my first trip to an organic food store in years entitled Can you be frugal and healthy. My point was yes you can. For me there are even more challenges, as I am trying to go gluten free on top of eating more healthy, and revisiting organic foods. I mean, would a frugal person even go there? Should a frugal person go there? I think we can and should. Here are some frugal things you can do to accommodate healthy eating. 1. Eat less. The reason poor people buy cheap food is because they can buy more … Continue reading

Keeping Special Needs Kids Healthy

Cold and flu season are right around the corner, and for parents of some special needs children, it’s a season we particularly dread. Our kids frequently have underlying medical conditions that can make even the most typical of childhood illnesses anything but child’s play. This season is of special concern with the emergence of the novel H1N1 virus, commonly known as the Swine Flu. H1N1 is expected to infect up to 40 percent of the population this flu season, which is double the usual number of expected cases of seasonal flu. And unlike the seasonal flu that normally targets the … Continue reading

Blogging Your Health: Pros and Cons
