Redefining Words: You Won't Believe this One - Blog Entry

11 Oct 2006 10:48 AM

Potentially, but fifty years ago, people didn't believe that blacks and whites should go to school together or marry. The norm is dictated by society and by the beliefs of people in that society -- society grows, it matures and it changes. What is considered socially acceptable now, wasn't not all that long ago.

Redefining Words: You Won't Believe this One - Blog Entry

This makes me think of King Henry the VIII -- who redefined the Church so he could get a divorce -- and later just didn't bother and lopped heads off -- I know it's not supposed to be funny, but it's all about self-validation

The NEA Addresses the School Dropout Crisis - Blog Entry

I dropped out of high school at the age of 16. I was bored out of my skull with the constant popularity contests and jockeying for class position. I was also bored with the classes themselves. I worked full time for two years. Since Texas law changed right before I dropped out, I wasn't ALLOWED to take a GED until I was 18 years old. So I waited, 1 week after my 18th birthday, I took the GED, a week after that the SAT, the week after that the ACT. By the end of May that year I was enrolled at the community college and on my way towards my college degree.

Part of the problem we have with high schools is that when I went -- the social pressure cooker and the class challenge don't measure up to each other.

A Sleep Later Strategy for Your Preschooler - Blog Entry

Kaye, that's a great idea. I've done the same thing with my early riser. The problem is, I'm an early riser by nature as well and she knows that I am usually up when she gets up so it's just a matter of keeping her occupied until my morning work is done.

Why I Choose Public School for My Children - Blog Entry

20 Sep 2006 09:37 AM

Great article Kaye and let me chime in with my ten cents. I went to public schools. I also attended the TAG program at one of the underfunded schools in our district that received a great deal more funding because the TAG middle school program was housed there. My school education was good, but my education didn't start and stop at the entrance to the schools. Schools can provide the resources, the teachers and the materials -- but without my grandmother -- I wouldn't have had half the education I did. My daughter is attending public school in a school district that is growing exponentially and property taxes are high to support the building of new schools, hiring new teachers and to provide school books and materials. I am donating time to help out in her class, the library and to fund raise. Everyone has the right to an education and whether the parents are poor, from another country or locked up in jail -- that is in no way a child's fault. As a community and as a nation, our duty is to our children and to provide them with the best we can. So if that means I have to pay a little more in property tax, pick up an item or two I wouldn't normally buy and go an extra mile or two to invest my time and energy in my daughter's school life -- then that's exactly what I'm going to do!

GREAT ARTICLE.

Jazzercise: It isn't What You Think - Blog Entry

19 Sep 2006 06:25 AM

What a great story Kaye! I love jazzercise, in fact, I pretty much love any form of dancing and yes, I can believe that you were in the best shape of your life. I know lots of people who don't think dancing is a sport on par with say baseball athletes and such -- but those people have never danced on a regular basis or they'd get it!
