I didn't even know they'd tossed it (by that time I was on a PC), but I remember using floppies to do everything because there was no hard drive and how much I loved the freedom that first computer gave me. A New Study Says Yes - Blog Entry06 Jul 2007 12:04 PM Oddly enough, when my daughter was a baby and toddler -- the only toys she had that were 'noisemakers' or 'interactive' was a Mozart cube that she still plays with. It plays classical music depending on which of the big buttons you hit on it and she loved it. All of her other toys required her own imagination to play with whether they were stuffed animals, baby dolls or blocks. She was given a Nintendo Gameboy when she was 4 and the first time she actually did anything with it is this summer -- she plays it maybe an hour or two tops every week. Her favorite pasttime with me is books, writing, crafts or playing board games together -- I don't even 'relax' in front of computers anymore because so much of my work is done in front of one. What they see on the surface is just pure fun, but if you were to ask my nephew how long is he allowed to play video games when he is at my house, he'd tell you -- an hour as long as he is behaving and not treating others badly because of it. The flip side, is that there are video games out there that are very educational -- my daughter can play all the word find and fill in the unscrambled letter games she wants -- but she usually only plays for 30 minutes before she moves on to another activity and she prefers reading and drawing to the games. It's not the technology that's evil, it's how much we let them play without teaching them self-control and diversity.
