The Great Novel

I've written novels before and that may sound very casual, but I have. I've never written the novel that takes off and is opted for publication, however. Much like sitting down to write my blogs every day, I try to set aside time to just let my mind wander and create -- but I am not always successful.  There are times when I think I have over emphasized the non-fiction portions of my creativity and not spent enough time being creative.

That being said, I am going to try and make an effort to update my journal with my progress. I wrote 500 words yesterday on a creative project. They weren't the best wrods I've ever written and I still don't have a feel for the story that I want to tell.  I have more than a few characters that are interesting and I may just write for them for a time being until a story thread reveals itself.

I can write from an outline, but I am not always successful that way -- but if I am not feeling like the thread is being found in the next couple of weeks, I'll focus a little harder and create an outline.  Any other fiction writers out there with thoughts on outlines?
