I Like Helpful People

I like people who are helpful. When I go to bed at night I like to think back over the day and take note of how I made the world a better place today. An easy way to "get things to note" is by being helpful to those around me. Even for those of you who have unbearably boring jobs, it's much more bearable when you've done something nice before the day ends. Wouldn't you agree?

Yesterday afternoon my neighbor, Johnny (his door is just to the right of mine) caught me in the garage and asked me if I had jumper cables. Unfortunately I didn't and the manager is on vacation…he had already asked a few people without luck. Then our other neighbor, Meme, comes in (who's door is just to the left of mine) and we ask her if she has cables. She says, "Yes, but I'm tired today." I was kind of surprised. It wasn't, "Oh, they are under a heap of stuff in my trunk…and I am tired…later." I could have understood that. But it would have taken her four steps to her trunk and maybe 10-30 seconds to get them out.

Is that strange to anyone else? I know that I come from a friendly place and now live in an unfriendly place…but your neighbor? And Johnny is a very nice man who is in a wheelchair and never asks for anything from anyone. Who wouldn't help him? Well, I guess not Meme. What does someone like her think about before she goes to bed, and does it make her happy? Anyone care to speculate?

You're right about being helpful to others....what goes around comes around.

Maybe Meme was ill?

Would she have allowed you to take her car keys to get the jumper cables, and to return them when Johnny was done?

Maybe she was just having a really bad day and could not handle one more issue or concern.

Did Johnny get his car jumped?

Thank you. It is true. I like to say, "What you put out comes back to you multiplied." Maybe she was sick. She is a little odd....I don't know. People just don't trust each other in my neighborhood and they shouldn't here, unfortunately. It's not a very good neighborhood. I met my neighbors friend the other day and told him my whole name. When I asked him his last name he said, "I'm not going to tell you that. You might hack me."

Johnny's battery isn't charging for some reason. He says that he is trading it in for a newer version.
