Coping with an adult with Asperger's (2) - Blog Entry

23 Sep 2006 07:45 PM

Hey Beth, how fortuitious that we both blogged this week on Aspergers. I did one on some groovy resources to use to increase the social skills of kids with Aspergers: http://mental-health.families.com/blog/a-super-duper-resource-site-for-working-with-a-child-who-has-aspergers . Sure seems to be a lot of Aspergers around. The prevalance stats say it's fairly low but that hasn't been my experience - it seems everywhere I go I am now meeting Aspergers.

Aimee my mother has botox injections into her throat - not for cosmetic reasons but for medical purposes. She suffers from Spasmodic Dysphonia. The only way she has voice is to have 3 monthly injections to release her constant muscle spasms. It's good to know its also being used for other health issues as well.

Teaching your Child about Money - Blog Entry

23 Sep 2006 02:40 PM

Some professionals reccomend giving your child a pocket money amount that correlates with their age: i.e, 11-years-old, $11.00. I don't know if I subscribe to this though because a K-Zone magazine costs the same amount for an eight yr old as it does an 11 yr old. That issue aside, I thoroughly recommend giving pocket money and helping kids with budgeting, saving and looking to the future beyond next months K-Zone.

Building Your Child's Vocabulary - Blog Entry

Tristi we have always played a game called "A word a week". I would pick a difficult/unusual/scientic word and we would practice it all week - repeating it, defining it, placing it into sentences, etc. My kids are fairly good wordsmiths and their general knowledge has always rated high in assessments. Wouldn't it be good if there was an emailed dictionary word of the day for kids. Any IT gurus out there - a kids dictionary word of the day is something I would have subscribed to.

Fitness Tips: Anger & Fitness - Blog Entry

"It's not about being angry, it's about what you do with the anger." Touche! Anger is fine, it's the behavior that people use while they're angry that becomes problematic. Anger is also a secondry emotion which means there are primary emotions pushing the anger up. I guess in terms of weight, it could be that weight is the secondary product of creating a barrier to holding other stuff in??? The more you hold in - the more you push the scales up. It's certainly a theory bandied around all the time in social science circles. Really good blog, Heather. I liked it.

How Do I know if a Child is Being Abused? - Blog Entry

22 Sep 2006 07:56 PM

Thanks Anna and Valorie - I hope others find it useful too. There's so much worry about child abuse that sometimes seeing the indicators laid out, and knowing that you're looking for clusters, not sungle behaviors, can set parents minds at rest.
