The Animal School: A Fable for Parents - Blog Entry

28 Aug 2006 07:09 PM

FANTASTIC metaphors. My son struggles in the education system (he has aspergers). He is a learner of great magnificance but not the way he is forced to learn in school. He averages school three times a week and the school is very supportive of the days that he just can't go. Our home schooling system in Australia is so different to what you have in the States and I read the home schooling blogs with great interest. I covert what you guys do. I'm going to print this off to give to my son's teacher. I know she will appreciate it. Thanks Kristyn.

Marriage Resources: Where to Get Help - Blog Entry

Thanks for advertising help agencies. There's no shame involved in asking for help if it is needed and your range of numbers supports but a small number of professionals ready to offer assistance. I've just started a series of blogs on the seven stages of violence in relationships and have added this blog as a link. The article can be found at http://mental-health.families.com/blog/the-cycle-of-violence-part-1-the-explosion . Thank you so much for assisting people Heather.

The Grooming Process of a Child Sexual Predator. - Blog Entry

28 Aug 2006 11:52 AM

Hi Brownie, just re checked the statistic source and yes, an average 400 chidren across the lifespan of the SERIAL abuser. It's important to remember that not all child abusers are serial abusers though. The stats I have seen for the numbers of victims per non serial perpetrator range between 39 and 80 children (That still sounds serial to me!!). Even if we take the lowest figure of 39, that's an awful lot of hurt children. The numbers also shocked me when I first started working in this area but it has also cemented for me the importance of protecting and reporting.

Coober Pedy - Australia's Gem - Blog Entry

27 Aug 2006 08:28 PM

YAHOO - lovely to see a little bit of Australia in the blogs. Thanks Libby. Did you know that both families.com Mental Health bloggers, Beth (http://members.families.com/beth/blog) and myself (http://members.families.com/imaginif/blog), are Australian? I've never been to Coober Pedy though. I believe it's super hot in summer and awfully cold in winter. There's an Australian myth that it's bad luck to wear opals on your wedding day. I have no idea where and how the myth was created, but you can bet your bottom dollar it's associated with Coober Pedy.

I like to lie in bed and read a magazine. It helps to relax me and sends me off to dream land. But a hard drive for research reasons sits well with me.

Cleaning Out the Refrigerator: A Culinary Nightmare - Blog Entry

27 Aug 2006 01:03 AM

My fridge loves me. Just like a cat, it delivers me useless tokens to contribute toward the nightly meal. Last purchase I bought a self cleansing fridge - well, It must have been faulty because it didn't clean out those squisy, water based cucumbers that I used to be so fond of! The love affair must be drawing to a period of storming because this evening I went to my darling fridge in adoration, lovingly stroked my fingers up its steel exterior, handled it in an indecent manner and pulled it toward me as if it was a door to heaven. Expecting to be seduced by offerings of chocolate or grapes, I was instead fanned by an odour reminiscent of potato famine Ireland. Thrilled by the chase of the hard to get, I dug around my fridge's bottom, and discovered a treasure too good to be true. Yep, there's enough for tea tonight, no need to go to the shop!

Do A Family Service Project - Blog Entry

This is a great idea and it's wonderful to see it promoted on families.com. I aim to pay it forward this Christmas and help make the world a better place. Some work places that I am aware of are organising their Christmas parties around a service need, ie., dressing festively and delivering meals on wheels, having their Christmas party at a women's shelter and invlolving the residents in fun activities. I think that's a great idea. Thanks Teresa.

Sick Child Care Centers- A Welcome Relief for Working Parents - Blog Entry

25 Aug 2006 07:19 PM

I used to work as a Social Worker for a Commonwealth agency. Along with customer service centres, they had call centres all over the coutry. The rate of sick days was staggering - most because parents had to stay home and care for sick kids. To the credit of this particular Commenwealth Department, they now build "Sick Kid" rooms into all their new buildings. The rooms are set up with terminals so that staff can at least catch up on computer based work while tending to their sick child. The rooms I have seen only accomodate 2 staff and their sick child/ren at a time but it has been a positive step in reducing absenteeism and evidence of a move toward a more family friendly work place.
