Aussie Slanguage. An English Language Lesson from Down Under. - Blog Entry

My daughter just rang and I was having a wee whinge to her. She told me I was a "sook". I pulled her up on using Ocker slang and she argued that "sook" is used all over the world. Is it? Do you guys used "sook" to explain someone who's whinging and whining? She had a better couple of words to describe me as well but I won't share them!!

Rock Spiders and Short Eyes: Do We Need Tougher Sentencing. - Blog Entry

That's a poignant question you pose Tristi - How much is a child's innocence and sense of well-being worth? Murders get death in some States. The pain of their victim is already over because they were murdered. Many children who have been sexually abused walk life like the living dead because of what has happened. Their suffering is enormous. The perpetrators, if ever sentenced, get off lightly compared to the ongoing suffering of the victim. If they go on to abuse another child, they create another walking dead. What are we doing to our kids?? Thanks for your comments Tristi.

How You Can Interfere in Opportunistic Prostitution - Blog Entry

Yes, far too common. The young ones who do it generally don't do it because they're bad or mad, they're just trying to survive. In their survival we make it worse for them by knocking them down. I am today taking a bag of clothing around to a local girls shelter, and at Christmas time I'll take a food hamper. I know it's only a little thing to do but imagine the imapct on our young women's life if everyone did it.

Why Schools are Teaching Social Skills - Blog Entry

TOUCHE Kaye. Not every family is capable of teaching social skills. Not every family is similar to the many families here at families.com. I am heartened to see that some teachers still teach social skills, despite a parental movement that dictates that these skills should only be taught by parents. Should this be the case, our kids will be schooling with many kids without the very basic skills for surviving society.

She'll be apples mate (translation: It's okay. You're welcome my friend). Have just posted the activity to go with this list of slanguage. Not all Aussie's talk like this - it's usually only the real ockers from outback. I say "fair dinkum" and "mate" all the time though.

Thanks Jenni. This is such an emotive area. I try to be balanced in my views but I remain frustrated that kids get sexually abused by released offenders - not all of course but still far too many. Thank you for your personal disclosure and your thoughts on tougher sentencing.

Seven Ways to Get the REAL Scoop on Your Child's Homework - Blog Entry

We regularly email my son's teacher and principal. This not only provides a record of conversations, concerns and issues, but it takes away the embarrassment my son experiences when he hears us on the phone, yet again, to school. Our school has been EXCELLENT in supporting us. We are now homeschooling 2 days per week and attending school 3 days. Homework has been dropped all together because it is way too stressful for my son. Instead, he works on a project of choice on his homeschooling days and presents his progress to his class on Tuesdays. This is a win/win situation for everyone and we are eternally grateful.

The Use of Open-Ended Questions in Finding Out About Child Sexual Abuse - Blog Entry

No worries QA. Open questions are imperative in keeping any relationship alive - they provide the talker with permission to talk about what they want/need to talk about.

What Are The Chances? The Shared Birthday Phenomenon - Blog Entry

15 Oct 2006 01:10 AM

No shared birthdays but I am able to celebrate two birthdays - because my parents could not remember what date I was born on. For years they thought it was one date, until official records stated that it was in fact the day after. Therefore, I argue I should be subjected to two gifts - one for traditional reasons and one for legit reasons (after all the Queen gets two birthdays). My family does not subscribe to my reasoning and they cringe at my comparision to the Queen!!!

What's Going on in Your Area? - Blog Entry

During October in Cairns we have Festival Cairns (it used to be called Fun in the Sun but protective behaviors around sun safety is such an issue for us that the name was changed) and Sexual Violence Awareness month. I've been busy with involvement in both and I'm so looking forward to the end of October!!!!! Australia doesn't celebrate Halloween the way you do in the States so it's almost a non issue for us...but...I have two October birthdays and one of them falls on Halloween. Makes themed birtday parties super easy!
