Positive Thoughts for the Day (1) - Blog Entry

06 Feb 2006 10:12 AM

What an uplifting article!! One of my favourite all-time sayings is "You're not here for a long time, you're here for a good time!!" With that in mind, I try and get as much enjoyment from my life experiences as I possibly can, because I don't want to be old and wrinkled one day with no hilarious memories to reminisce about!!

Depression-Symptoms and Treatment (2) - Blog Entry

It is the overuse of the term "depression" in everyday language, as well as the "common cold of mental health" tag that clinical depression has copped, that makes it something that is frequently misunderstood and hugely trivialised. Many people just don't realise that depression can kill.

The Desperate Housewives Effect - Blog Entry

"The root cause of eating disorders is non-acceptance of the self. It is this area that needs addressing rather than literally running away from ourselves on the Stairmaster."

While I agree with you, someone's perceived need to exercise and maintain their body need not equate to lack of self-acceptance. I accepted long ago that I'm not skinny, but it's not going to change overnight so there's no point worrying constantly about it - but that doesn't mean being complacent and not doing anything about it. If anything, it's a positive thing - because I don't obsess over how many calories I'm burning off etc but am just happy that I'm getting fit.

Recovering from a Breakdown (3) - Blog Entry

"...but you will definitely not be adding only one task at a time to your daily schedule for the rest of your life!" - very, very true!! Although, as you alluded to, it certainly CAN feel that way in the early days. The hardest thing I found was people close to me not understanding how difficult the little things could be. Right at the peak of my 'breakdown' (although I don't overly like that word) I had to move out of my unit in a hurry with my father's assistance - and he just could not get how difficult a task like packing and moving (that, apart from being emotion-stirring, involves a great deal of organisation and thinking) was for me, let alone trying to do it in a day!!

What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder? - Blog Entry

06 Feb 2006 08:36 AM

All I can say is...Poor David!! I shudder to think of what it would be like to be unable to think beyond myself, my achievements, my skills (imagined or real) etc as, to me anyway, other people are an endless source of intrigue.

Narcissism-Symptoms and Treatment (1) - Blog Entry

The criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder could just as easily be used as a criteria to get on Hollywood's A-list, such is the horrid behaviour that many celebrities exhibit...which makes me wonder if it's less of a mental health issue and more of a social problem? Budding psychologist though I am, I tend to take the more sociological perspective.

This is all excellent, common-sense advice. The last time I was sick, my biggest problem was thinking that I was great when really I wasn't and taking on far too much too soon. If I'd had this kind of advice back then I probably would have saved myself a lot of grief!!

Junk Food and Mental Health - Blog Entry

I found this article really interesting. Having worked with young children for quite a number of years, I'd pondered (as I'm sure many of us have!) the link between food and mental health (particularly ADHD, Asperger's etc) but hadn't heard the results of research etc until now

Depression, Antidepressants, and Sex - Blog Entry

Having a caring, open-minded and understanding partner makes all the difference in a situation like this. In itself, this can sometimes be hard because, (as my pschiatrist told me) you don't just suffer with a mental illness, all your loved ones do too, such are the effects.

Thanks for the laugh Beth!! Having been on the receiving end of therapy, and studying psychology at the moment, I really appreciated the humour ;)
