16 Feb 2009 08:48 AM An Odyssey in the Psalms: Ps18 ( Part A)This psalm is dedicated to the God of David who in difficult times, demonstrated His mercy to him. As there was no hope left, God manifested himself mightily To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lordon the day when the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. Is it this easy for us today? Is it a miracle formula to take us from anguish, from the torments of a difficult situation? These words: “Blessed be the Lord”, are they a magic formula by which all our problems disappear by enchantment? What I do see in this phrase is the edge of the iceberg of a life of intense communion with God. One can’t have this attitude of praise in difficult times, without trusting wholy the Father’s promises. 4 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me; 5 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called upon the Lord ;to my God I cried for help. Is it how we act when we are in distress: Call upon our God, cry to Him? Or do we just criticize, weep, holding tight against us our “teddy bear” of scepticism and unbelief? 6 From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. 7 Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry. 8 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. 9 He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. 10 He rode on a cherub and flew; he came swiftly on the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him, thick clouds dark with water. 12 Out of the brightness before him hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds. 13 The Lord also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice, hailstones and coals of fire. 14 And he sent out his arrows and scattered them; he flashed forth lightings and routed them. 15 Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils. 16 He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. 17 He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. Here is a very beautiful description of one facet of our Father. If that’s what it takes, our Father will turn upside down the foundations of the earth to rescue us! Reading what David wrote about the Father of glory is so comforting! When we hear the thunder from the sky, we can remember this psalm and tell ourselves that our God is at work, to rescue one of His children! 18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. 19 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. This is how the ennemy will always proceed: surprise us as a traitor! As the difficult circumstances might suffocate our praise, the ennemy charges and attacks. But Glory be to the name of the Lord, our God who never sleeps, always watching to rescue us! Prayer : “O Lord, this morning a praise arises from my heart! I only want to tell you I love You! I love you because you care for me, You renew everyday Your favours. In you I find safeness, no matter if the storm of adversity breaks out in my life. I can always count on your faithfulness!” May God reveal to you today, a bit more of the immensity of His love! Jacques No comments on this article yet. Be the first to comment! Discuss this article
