"My Son Has Juvenile Diabetes and Autism." A Mother's Interview - Blog Entry

15 Apr 2008 12:52 PM

I am the parent of 2 children with type 1 diabetes, one of whom also has autism. My son, with autism and diabetes was diagnosed in 2000 at the age of 7, my daughter at age 12. My daughter is just beginning to test drive the pump. I have some concerns about it for my son. Not sure how he'll handle it and how independent he can be expected to be with it. It certainly does off hope for much better blood sugar control which is always desireable. Your recommendations and strategies are right on target. I actually get better compliance from my son because of his desire for routine and predictability than I do from my daughter who leans towards wanting to be the care-free unscheduled teenager. I would be interested in connecting with other parents who are facing the same challenges. I am in the San Jose area and know of a couple of families facing similar issues. I am also VERY interested in the research that is going on with the autism auto-immune link. Does anyone know if the other auto-immune diseases like lupus, scleroderma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, MS, any more prevalent in the autism population? Fighting the good fight. Joanna
