How Important is Penmanship and Handwriting?

05 Sep 2008 06:05 AM

I see no one has yet commented to your question in over a year. I just read it and so I'll take a swack at it.

Two reasons for practicing cursive penmanship specifically come to mind. First, and most anecdotal, is that while neat handwriting may seem to increase one's wage, it does affect people's evaluation of you. We do judge people negatively who exhibit sloppy handwriting. The second and most important is that studies have shown that cursive writing helps develops neural pathways between the two hemisphere's of the brain. Practicing neat penmanship reinforces those pathways, making them stronger. This helps increase the communication between our analytical and artistic sides.
