Yes - it has begun. Not exciting... he'll have to learn boundaries now.

Keeping Your Faith at College - Blog Entry

So true. Strangely this is even difficult at some religious colleges/universities. Keeping the faith, though, is extremely important. It certainly was for me.

When Doing Less is More - Blog Entry

I think we'd all be handicapped to a certain degree. Technology has given us wonderful tools. I don't think I'd be tackling a graduate degree if not for the ability to edit single lines instead of using a typewriter and re-writing pages.

But, sadly, many would be incapable of functioning. So much is "automated" that they forget how to actual perform the simple, lower level tasks that those advanced tasks are built upon. Maybe we'd be better off without technology for a while [but I'd prefer we keep it around!]

We utilize plagiarism software along with common sense. The real penalties don't occur until the second offense... so after they meet with us they have a pretty firm grasp on what is and isn't acceptable.

Drama in Education - Blog Entry

There is a strange proximity and immediate humanity that occurs with drama. Things become more real, more present, more important. I recently wrote a skit for an ethics conference and they found that those human bodies moving and speaking provide a much greater ethical quandary than silently reading the text on a page. Drama is very powerful!

Oh, that's coming! After they've taken the final exam and figured out that assignments and points add up to a letter grade that affects the rest of their time my office will be flooded. Luckily my TA's provide some buffer zone for me on the standard questions/complaints. Phew! End of semester here we come!

Reconnecting with Reading - Blog Entry

Your comment about reading to High schoolers reminded me of something my mother read to us in middle school. I think it was "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea." We pretended to that it wasn't cool but we really enjoyed the story!

Death in the Family - Blog Entry

Yes... that was part of what motivated the drive. I never knew any of my great-grandparents and I wanted to make sure Cillian would be able to meet both his great-grandparents AND his great-great-grandparents. Death's are hard... but children are hope! Thanks so much for sharing!

Unfortunate but Necessary Changes in Education - Blog Entry

Yes, trust is a very important component of all of this. Teachers could also do (and have done) harm. We certainly hope for a world where teachers can make a positive difference in students' lives. I'm so happy for you that a teacher could be a positive influence in a time of trial. The entire reason I wish to become a teacher is because I've had so many great ones! Thanks so much for sharing!
