12 Dec 2006 08:48 AM It's Holiday Time Again!
Can you believe it's December already! Maybe I'm showing my age here, but it's hard to have watched this semester fly by without taking any classes!! Some of my friends are still at the University of South Carolina, and they're all focusing on their final exams this week. Not me! Instead I'm part of the world of working women everywhere who's wondering how on earth they'll finish their Christmas shopping before December 25th gets here! So the search begins--department store after department store--to find my brother, sister, cousins and friends the perfect presents. It's too bad I can't give them all picture books! I am sending Sylvan Dell's "Christmas Eve Blizzard " to my youngest cousin, Luke. He'll love it! Especially since his family just moved from North Carolina to Michigan--he's definitely seen his fair share of snow already. I don't mean to sound like an advertisement, but the story is so sweet I want to share it: "Christmas Eve Blizzard " tells the story of a young boy named Nicholas. One holiday season, he and his grandfather find an injured cardinal in a snowstorm. Nicholas pushes all of his Christmas traditions aside to help the beautiful bird while his grandfather reminisces about seeing Cardinals in his native country, Mexico. Peppered with Spanish words and phrases, "Chirstmas Eve Blizzard " is a gentle reminder that loving and caring for each other is the most important part of the holiday season--and its tender ending will touch your heart! "Christmas Eve Blizzard " is written by Andrea Vlahakis and illustrated by Emanuel Schongut for children ages five to nine. It was a finalist for the SPCA's Henry Bergh Book Award in 2005 and was the Winter 2005 New York Library Association's Book of the Season. The picture book is also in the Accelerated Reader program and has been reviewed by Armchair Interviews , the Midwest Book Review , Parents Choice and the CLCD & Children's Literature . Catherine Ipcizade (5617) 20 Dec 2006 05:15 PMI agree--Christmas Eve Blizzard is a beautiful holiday gift idea--it's one of my favorites! Good luck with your Christmas shopping! Other than one gift for my husband, I'm finished. Phew! And that includes the wrapping. That's a first!!! Happy Holidays!
