My boys (now 4 and 7) didn't realize that the TV didn't need some kind of round disc or video in order for it to work until my eldest was about 4! LOL Even now their TV view is restricted to what's showing on Playhouse Disney or shows similar to that ...that come on round disc or video (usually associated with Thomas the Tank Engine, Magic School Bus or Baby Einstein). Sometimes I worry that I'm overprotecting them, but they still manage to keep up-to-date with mainstream kid culture via their peer group! The ABC Family channel sounds awesome. We have a "Gold" channel over here that does similar - tonight (Friday) is my all time fav TV show, Fame! :) Disney's Billionaire Baby - Blog Entry09 May 2008 05:17 AM For me it's the photographer Annie Leibovitz who should be taking the heat. It's way too easy to blame the celebrity, or even her parents, but this is a world famous photographer who knew exactly what she was doing - photographing a 15 year old idol who thousands of young girls look up to. To photograph her the way she did was to take her to a completely different level and that's where the photoshoot went wrong for me. I guess the parents responsibility comes in the fact that she was allowed to be photographed for "Vanity Fair", which hardly a teenage magazine and so this kind of thing was on the cards all along. But it's easy to be wise after the fact right? Having said that, the photographs may be interpreted as racy, but next to what you see girls of her age being allowed to wear/not wear when they are out and about, the photographs were quite demure! Katie-Anne pleased to have boys when she sees the state of undress young teens wear in the name of fashion! Momma's on a Diet: Week 5 Weigh-In - Blog Entry12 Mar 2007 02:07 AM Most of the time Abi, the answer's no right? LOL Thanks Meg. What eating plan are you following? Is this the same one that you had success with in the past? On Having a Weight Loss Buddy - Blog Entry09 Mar 2007 01:30 AM Thanks for being my cheerleader Lisa! It's been a tough week what with one thing and another, but despite the fact that the scales won't be kind to me, I have no intention of falling off wagon. Does Television Influence Children's Nutrition? - Blog Entry07 Mar 2007 03:20 AM I guess Havard researchers aren't that familiar with "The Wiggles" and other videos for youngsters. My kids don't get stuff to eat and drink (actually they mostly drink milk or water if they're thirsty) when they're watching TV, nor did I as a child (or even now as an adult - whilst I don't let the boys watch that much TV and they do spend a lot of time doing other forms of play, I have to wonder if they considered how much of the TV unhealthy eating/drinking is more of a parental choice rather than a TV problem. I know it's easy to blame the parents for everything, but it's equally easy to blame the TV - and in this case, the TV doesn't buy and distribute the food and drink. Momma's on a Diet: Week 5 Weigh-In - Blog Entry06 Mar 2007 04:43 AM That's a fact! If I have to write it down it makes me think - do I really need this enough to record it? Sometimes being lazy has it's advantages! LOL Disney's Wild Hogs Come in First! - Blog Entry05 Mar 2007 05:28 AM Quite right. Thanks Lisa. I don't associate these actors with "child friendly" movies (even Tim Allen's which are often aimed at children!) so I didn't think. Thanks for raising the point. When to Try Again After a Miscarriage - Blog Entry05 Mar 2007 03:14 AM I miscarried my first baby, and one month later conceived my second baby. It was a complicated pregnancy and eventually he was c-sectioned out because of IUGR at 34 weeks (he stopped growing at week 30/31) - he was actually born around the time my first miscarried angel would have been born. A year later we started trying to conceive our second and last child. There were two more angels that came first - about 7 months apart - and on neither occasion were we told to wait before trying again. When first found I was pregnant with Connor, I said that this was it, if I lost another baby, we weren't trying again. Each miscarriage I felt a piece of my heart was lost with the baby. Today, I still grieve each lost angel on the anniversary of the miscarriage - the first 2 dates are unforgetable - one's my mum's birthday, and I came from the hospital having had the 2nd miscarriage confirmed just in time to see the 2nd plane hit the WTC on Sept 11th - so I make a conscious effort to remember the date of the 3rd. Miscarriage is something that affects all women differently, but for those women who are positively trying to conceive it's a desvestating experience and one that is not easily, if ever, forgotten. What to do When Nobody Gives You a Shower - Blog Entry05 Mar 2007 03:03 AM In my native UK, they don't have baby showers, and here in Sweden it's not even customary for someone to bring a gift to a new baby. One of these days I'd love to attend a baby shower, they look like great fun. How Quickly Everything Changes. Are You Prepared? - Blog Entry05 Mar 2007 03:00 AM I find the most frustrating thing about being a WAHM is that you have to try and have enough projects to make up your salary and so you judge your workload on the time you know will be available - and then life conspires against you and some germ hits the children, or yourself, and work gets behind because there's no-one else to do it. I'm married to a freelance illustrator so whilst we enjoy our freedom as regards working ours and which projects we work on, we both know that juggling time in an emergency situation is one of our biggest financial fears. |
