Childless Couples - Blog Entry

05 Jan 2009 12:56 PM

I believe if you know you're not going to be "parent material" you should not have kids. We are past the times when children were expected. My SIL and her husband are childless by choice. I do often wonder who will take care of them in their old age. Between my husband and I, we care for and/or oversee the care of several relatives who are elderly and/or very sick. It is very stressful and I often wonder if my only child will have to care for my SIL and her husband when they are elderly. Is it out of line to ask what sorts of preparations they've made and or what their wishes are? My child is their only relative of the next generation and will most likely be the only one. There is a history of Alzheimer's and all I can think is that, worst case scenario, he will be caring for his father, aunt, uncle (all three of whom have the history of Alzheimer's, and the uncle is already disabled) and his aunt's husband.
