Andrea, I think that you were doing the right thing by being open minded about the books and giving them a try. I would have discarded the thought too if my children did not enjoy them.

I think that it is probably going through so well without rejection because it is an after school program and not during the day. I think that it can be successful but it takes a lot of time and creativity for a teacher to use something like this.

My school does not have a uniform. My sister's girls have to wear a uniform (certain type shirts, etc) beginning in the fall. I think that it will actually cost her more because she will have to buy the "uniforms" plus clothes for the weekends and after school. I agree that I would hate to be the enforcer. My little cousin will be attending a school that has a full out uniform. They have a type of consignment show we parents can buy and sell used uniforms.

I think that this is hard for all of us. I once heard a rule in teaching that said if the children (middle schoolers) never complain then you are not doing your job. I think that if our children (students) always get their way then we are not doing what we should. However, it is very hard when your child says mean things to you, especially if they choose someone else such as a spouse or grandparent. Good article, Kori.

Thanks, Valorie, and I agree. I wish that there was some way to make parents be responsible. I am just not sure how. I am opposed to requiring preschool. I have had children in my class who were very ready for school and never attened preschool. Home lives are a big factor in school readiness. I have also had many parents say that they don't like homework because it is the school's job to teach not the parents. Therefore, I can totally identify with you. I think that teh governments realize that it would be nearly impossible to make everyone be a good parent so they are trying to compensate for those who are not. Your insights are always wonderful!

Very true, Nicole. Why not build on the interest of the children? Like I said, I have not read or watched Harry Potter. However, Cinderella, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast and the Tooth Fairy all contain what some could say was magic or witchery.

After we were home from the hospital I had to go back for the heel prick. In addition to going back, I had to take my 19 month old daughter with me. On top of it all my son's dirty diaper leaked! The heel prick was not a good experience for me!
